APL is seeking physicists experienced in low temperature work. As a member of a highly multidisciplinary team, you will work on a variety of experiments, including construction of cryogenic apparatuses, development of cryogenically-cooled sensors, and exploration of novel quantum systems.

As a Low Temperature Physicist, You Will
- Support existing programs through day-to-day operations of various cryogenic systems and experiments.
- Supply high-quality ideas and insights into both existing and future problems, leading to novel solutions adaptable to APL's mission and sponsor needs.
- Develop creative, independent research in support of existing efforts.
- Collaborate with a team of physicists, electrical engineers, materials scientists, and fabrication technicians to develop innovative devices, sensors, system prototypes, new insights, and responsive proposals to meet unique sponsor needs.
- Be encouraged to fill leadership roles on existing projects, and to propose new research directions for APL's sponsors.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a PhD in Physics or a closely related field (e.g., Applied Physics).
- Have 1+ year of experience with cryogenic systems, or in characterizing materials or systems at cryogenic temperatures.
- Have demonstrated the ability to conceptualize, propose, and implement research concepts using cryogenic systems.
- Have a strong desire to work in an interdisciplinary, applied science environment with time-bound, mission-driven goals.
- Wish to apply your skills to new areas and expand your knowledge beyond low temperature physics to protect the nation from its adversaries.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI w/ Polygraph security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and need to meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have experience studying cryogenic fluids or building complex cryogenic apparatuses for custom applications.
- Hold an active TS/SCI w/ Polygraph security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
