Academic Support Teacher – LOOP Program

Department: Community and Student Affairs

Unit: No Benefits (NB)

Wage: Certified - $26.00; Non-Certified - $20.00

Program Dates: August - May

JOB SUMMARY

Provide quality academic instruction for students attending the LOOP summer school program and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students. Program days are Monday – Thursday and academic session instructions are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for one hour. Program hours will vary depending on the LOOP site dismissal times. The hours per week are 3.5 hours.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide quality instruction using research-based instructional strategies during academic sessions using the required curriculum and effectively maintain and monitor on‑going student progress
  • Provide students with effective instruction/modeling/interventions in the various behavioral areas
  • Under the leadership and guidance of the Lead Academic Teacher, provide appropriate educational supplemental activities to meet both groups and individual needs of all children within the classroom
  • Utilize best classroom management practices to create a learning environment that is conducive to learning, curtails disruptive behaviors and enhances students' self‑esteem
  • Participate in and contribute to professional development; implement strategies learned with fidelity
  • Attend all regularly scheduled planning meetings
  • Submit accurate time sheets to Lead Teacher
  • Collaborate with LOOP staff on various activities
  • Report absences to Lead Academic Teacher in advance (if known)
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • College coursework in elementary/secondary education, Work Keys Certificate, ETS Test, or equivalent accepted
  • Prior to working with students, complete LARA (PA 116) mandated requirements:
    • Comprehensive Childcare Background Check (CCBC) including fingerprinting by LARA approved agencies (no cost to applicant)
    • Obtain CCBC eligibility to work in a licensed childcare facility
    • Complete MiRegistry Health and Safety Online Modules A, B, C and Transportation or annual Health and Safety Refresher Course; submit learning record transcript to Office of Extended Learning upon completion of MiRegistry Health and Safety Courses or refresher course trainings.
    • Module A MUST be completed before working with students.
    • Obtain First Aid Certification and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation by LARA approved agencies; submit ARC/AHA ce1iificate/card to Office of Extended Learning upon completion
  • Display physical, social, mental and emotional soundness to execute the duties of job
  • Serve as a role model for all students and within school community
  • Interact with co‑workers, administration, students, parents and the community in positive, supportive, and cooperative ways
  • Encourage the team spirit and contribute as a team member in the decision‑making processes of the school as facilitated by the building administrator
  • Maintain and promote school district goals and objectives
  • Comply with state, federal and District policies, procedures, rules, and the union contract
  • Regular and on‑time in‑person attendance is required
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College degree and teaching certificate preferred or;
  • Valid Michigan Health License (Social Worker, Physical Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist)
  • Teaching or tutoring experience in urban setting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well‑being, and work output of students.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
