Job summary

Frederick County Public Schools is seeking a long-term substitute teacher for a temporary assignment beginning Sept 24 for about three months. Hours are 8:30 am to 4:00 pm with a pay rate of $24.16 per hour. This position is non‑benefited.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support for students and facilitate lesson planning.

  • Communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relations with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Guide learning toward school system goals by following policies and procedures.
  • Assist administration and staff in fulfilling the school mission with ethical professionalism.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competencies.
  • Supervise students in various school settings.
  • Maintain records and monitor care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Education

Associate’s degree or 60 college credits

Position Overview

Position available tentatively from September 24th for approximately 3 months. Daily work hours: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Salary: $24.16 per hour. Non‑benefited.

Role

Long‑term substitute teachers are responsible for practices and behaviors that demonstrate necessary teaching competencies, effective classroom management, positive personal qualities, and other instructional matters. They ensure all students have equal instructional opportunities and create a classroom environment that is challenging, dynamic, and comprehensive.

Essential Functions

Reporting directly to the school principal, the long‑term substitute teacher performs the following duties:

  • Provide instructional support for students and facilitate lesson planning.
  • Create a conducive learning environment and use classroom time effectively.
  • Implement approved curriculum using diverse teaching techniques and instructional resources.
  • Use evaluation to promote student growth and development intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Demonstrate fair, firm, and consistent behavior toward students and promote self‑discipline.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relations with students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of school system goals by following board policies and administrative procedures.
  • Assist administration and staff in reaching the mission for the school by applying ethical standards in professional relationships.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competencies.
  • Supervise students in a variety of school settings.
  • Maintain appropriate records and monitor the care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or 60 college credits.
  • No certification required.
  • Knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Capability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Possession of an MSDE issued professional teacher certificate with the appropriate content endorsement.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.
Physical Requirements
  • Speak with an understandable voice and sufficient volume for normal conversation and group addressing.
  • Travel to school and local locations, and attend state meetings, sometimes with little notice.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Spend long hours sitting.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Use manual dexterity to handle, manipulate, and/or feel objects and use office technology.
  • Move about the work area with sufficient mobility.
  • Read and comprehend printed materials; have sufficient vision for detail and distant objects.
  • Hear and comprehend conversations in person and on the telephone, and distinguish sounds up to 20 feet.
  • Occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or lift up to 15 pounds.
Work Environment

Moderate noise typical of classroom, office, and conference rooms with computers, printers, and telephones.
