Job description

Long-Term Sub for Middle School Math Teacher

San Francisco Friends School seeks an experienced Interim Middle School math teacher who is compelled by the school’s mission and committed to progressive math education to serve as an interim teacher for 7th-Grade Math, beginning November 2025 to June 2026 Academic Year.

Mathematics at Friends is an inquiry-based, conceptual, hands-on program where students grapple with problems and make meaning of the mathematics for themselves. We strive to build the capacity in students to think mathematically, solve problems with confidence, and love mathematics.

Teachers are engaged in regular collaboration, curriculum development, and pedagogical reflection to offer the most meaningful, responsive, and student-centered program possible.

Teachers work in cross-disciplinary teams to develop and implement curricula aimed at examining relevant contemporary topics in their full complexity. In addition to discipline-specific classes, teaching teams also work together to design and lead a block dedicated to interdisciplinary studies. Timely communication, patience, humility, willingness to listen, and the ability to problem-solve with peers are at the core of this work.

Candidates should have a strong math background and be invested in collaborating with colleagues and working closely with students. Experience as an instructional leader or curriculum designer is also highly desired for the next instructor. While the curriculum goals and lessons for the remainder of the year will already be established, the interim teacher will review and prepare thoroughly for all daily lessons and will be ready to make any necessary curricular adjustments in the second semester.

Responsibilities:

  • Classroom teaching at the Middle School level: 7th-grade Mathematics
  • Providing positive, constructive feedback and assessing student progress
  • Fostering collaboration and positive behavior in the student community through strong classroom management
  • Collaborating with colleagues, student support teams, and parents to promote student success
  • Supporting close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, and student assessment
  • Helping to organize and lead middle school-wide, math-focused events
  • Co-facilitating a student advisory group; supervising lunch and recess; advising a club
  • Preparing timely and attentive parent communications, including quarterly student progress reports
  • Participating in community-building efforts, school-wide events, and committees
  • Engaging with parents and guardians about math content, approach, and philosophy in both proactive and responsive ways, including an evening event
  • Attending and supervising the 7th Grade overnight outdoor education trip as well as various field-based curricular and cultural explorations
  • Facilitating student-led conferences in the second semester

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, in a math-related field preferred
  • Late elementary or middle school teaching experience in mathematics
  • Ability to engage, support, and motivate students of all abilities
  • A love and appreciation for middle school
  • Openness to Quaker philosophy and a commitment to inclusivity
  • Highly collaborative and creative team player
  • Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of students and adults

Preferred Qualities:

  • Four or more years of experience teaching middle school math
  • Advanced degree in mathematics or mathematics education
  • Knowledge of current pedagogy and facility with hands-on and project-based instruction
  • Ability to communicate with families in Spanish

Compensation and Benefit Summary:

Competitive, exempt salary based on experience and qualifications.

$2,885 to $6,190 semi-monthly (placement on scale based on relevant teaching experience)
