Primary Duties/Brief Description of Work

The job selection process allows for the selection of a candidate at either the Planner 1, Planner 2, or Senior Planner position based on their experience and education. This is an excellent opportunity for planners at a variety of levels to build their skill set, take on increasing responsibilities, and progress upward as a Planner. The ideal candidate will have experience developing small area plans, possess strong communication and writing skills, have experience working with the community and facilitating meetings, and have an understanding of basic research and basic data analysis techniques.

The primary tasks for this position are to work on the development of neighborhood, corridor, and other specific-area plans, and requires someone who is organized and self-motivated. Other work will include a variety of research, analysis, and associated planning work and will regularly involve work with local residents, business owners, and other City departments.

The position exists in the collaborative environment of the Long Range Planning Division. This division covers the creation of small-area and corridor plans, redevelopment planning and property development, historic preservation, reports on our comprehensive plan GSO2040, and data gathering and analysis. The division has a strong team environment and focuses on quality work that has an impact on our community. Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal). Must have reliable means of transportation.

This job is Exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 1-3 years of relevant experience in Planning or closely related fields
  • Experience with local government operations
  • Experience with land use planning and/or development regulations
  • Driver’s License ("OR" ability to obtain within 6 months of employment)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Planning or a closely related field
  • Public speaking experience
  • AICP certification
