Responsibilities

  • Load finished sand into railcars following procedures and safety standards.
  • Inspect hopper cars and loading equipment before/after loading.
  • Coordinate with Locomotive Operator on spots and movement.
  • Maintain accurate paperwork and documentation.
  • Operate and maintain loading unit equipment as required.
  • Safely secure loaded hopper cars and complete required records.
  • Communicate issues to management as they arise.
  • Read and follow loading procedures to meet quality and weight limits.
  • Assist with minor railcar repairs and adjustments.
  • Work with management to ensure safe rail operations.

We are a fully integrated sand supply and services company, offering complete sand, logistics, storage, and management solutions to our customers with our in-basin trans-loading terminals and our smart system storage capabilities. We own and operate premium frac sand mines and related processing facilities in Wisconsin and Illinois, which have access to three Class I rail lines, allowing us to deliver products substantially anywhere in the United States and Canada.

Position Description

This position follows company policy for loading out of rail cars. This position operates various equipment through the use of computer controls for the purpose of loading finished quality sand product into the railcars for shipment within MSHA safety standards. This position will perform additional tasks related to rail shipments including railcar inspection and the unloading of railcars.

The position will work under the supervision of the Logistics Shift Supervisor, but will require taking direction from other Smart Sand managers. This position is based primarily at our Oakdale, WI facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Completes required documentation ensuring paperwork is accurate and verified.
  • Works with Locomotive Operator on hopper car spots and movement.
  • Inspects hopper car for product loading.
  • Connects loading equipment to the hopper car.
  • Inspects and ensures loading unit equipment is working properly.
  • Loads hopper car according to loading procedures, quality standards, and safe practices.
  • Checks the hopper car after loading to ensure that gross weight does not exceed regulations.
  • Communicates with management on any problems that occur.
  • Secures loaded hopper car and completes required paperwork.
  • Receives and transmits information by radio and telephone.
  • Couples and uncouples cars, operates switches, and makes minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses.
  • Maintains awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure all rail safety.
  • Wears all protective clothing that may be required to transfer the product in a manner that ensures maximum personal safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior rail, transload, or refinery experience preferred.
  • MSHA training and experience is also a plus.

  • Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good judgment is required.
  • Must be adaptable and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are essential.
  • Must have high safety standards for self and others.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Must be willing to work any assigned shift, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to read.
