Job summary

Sappi North America in Portland, ME seeks a Summer Logistics Intern to support coordination of finished goods from production facilities to customers and distribution centers. Summary: The summer position requires coordination and close working relationships with domestic and international logistics service providers, customs house brokers, customers as well as union employees within production facilities and distribution centers. The overall objective of this position is to ensure the efficient and effective coordination of finished goods to customers and distribution centers while realizing cost savings and service improvements.

Some Responsibilities could include:

• Coordinateslogistics activities via ocean, air, rail, intermodaland truck with multiple carriers from point of pick up to point of delivery
• Proactively monitors shipments from booking through delivery by tracking, maintaining records, and providing problem resolution as needed
• Investigates problems, finds root causes, and develops solutions
• Assesses the effectiveness of currentlogistics and/or transportation processes, determines improvements, and coordinates institutionalized change
• Provides analytical support for projects, new business opportunities, and proposals
• Responsible for assembling data, analyzing performance, identifying problems, and developing recommendations which support the management of logistics and supply chain operations
• Ensure transport capacity for production facilities and/or distribution centers
• Monitors contract compliance of carriers and other logistics service providers
• Develops standard operating procedures and performance standards
• Coordination and communication of logistics issues between logistics service providers, Inside Sales, and Outside Sales
• Evaluate logistics service providers and mill shipping performance continually to ensure adherence to performance standards
• Create and publish reports on the performance of logistics

Minimum Education, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

• Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Studies
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills; familiar with logistics and production planning concepts (e.g., just-in-time, materials requirement planning)
• Must be a self-starter who is able to work independently and possess the ability and desire to work effectively, with attention to detail, to meet the requirements of the position.
• Broad range of computer skills—database, spreadsheet, statistics applications, and logistics software packages and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
• Understand transportation contracts and tariffs
• Ability to communicate findings, make recommendationsand facilitate change
• Comfortable working with individuals at all organizational levels
