Job description

Responsible for sourcing, negotiating and purchasing logs, standing timber and pulp wood chips from government, private or other agencies to ensure a stable supply of logs, stumpage and raw material to meet manufacturing objectives and region operating goals. Sells excess and non-usable/non-profitable logs to external customers. Responsible for implementing the Company’s policies, procedures, and management actions to ensure compliance with Sustainable Forestry Management, third party certification programs (SFI, FSC, & PEFC) and Chain-of-Custody system certification requirements. Responsible for the communication of the Company’s SFI commitment and promotion of the practice of sustainable forestry to employees, wood producers, and suppliers.

Essential Functions

  • Provides a safe work environment for all who work on or use fee, public or private land where Boise Cascade is operating.
  • Plans and manages all phases of wood procurement to include, but not limited to, resource development/contracts; price estimates and bidding; purchase and delivery of raw materials (logs, stumpage, chips, etc.); appraise stumpage and raw materials; purchase recommendations/actions; log purchase/log sales; contract negotiation; assessing logging issues; understand and support region/mill raw material needs/species, etc.
  • Promotes/implements/coordinates efforts to ensure Boise Cascade maintains compliance in all aspects of state and federal laws and to promote best management practices in SFI standards and guidelines.
  • Provide safety training to all employees, agents and contractors engaged in BC Operations.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the process of continuous improvement.
  • Identifies and responds actively to the needs of all customers.

Minimum Education/Experience/Physical Functions

College degree, or equivalent work experience in related job function. Degree in forestry management or related field with timber acquisition experience preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in related job function. Demonstrated knowledge of logging, milling, appraisal contracts and forestry operations. Regional and/or local knowledge of timber resources and contracts (government, private, etc.) is essential. Also requires two (2) to three (3) years timber cruising plus two (2) to three (3) years logging and/or contract administration. Effective interpersonal, analytical and planning and organization skills. Must understand responsibilities for environmental compliance and management.

Scope

Up to 50mmbf saw logs and 150,000 tons pulpwood. The scope of the job will be consistent with demonstrated abilities, increasing over time as directed by supervisor. Performance measurement will be by agreement in the performance review process.

May direct the activities of professional Foresters and/or technicians performing cruising activities. May interact with agency regulators or agency land management personnel. Receives general direction to meet specified objectives of the region. Mistakes may have significant financial, environmental, and public policy impact. Often receives direction from Sr. Log Buyer to develop broader experience in overall Region operations.
