Job summary

GATX Corporation is seeking a Locomotive Technician 1 in Louisiana to assist in the maintenance, repair, and inspection of locomotives. Job description

Overview

The Locomotive Technician 1 assists other Locomotive Technicians in the maintenance, repair and inspection of GATX-owned locomotives. Ensures all necessary work order information is complete to facilitate correct and timely customer billing. Must understand and follow GATX and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures and demonstrate good teamwork skills with knowledge of FRA regulations.

The technician partners with the manager and other site personnel to maintain certifications, customer suitability requirements and other job qualifications. Works toward obtaining the skills necessary to advance to Locomotive Technician 2.

Responsibilities

1. Locomotive Service and Repairs: Assists other Locomotive Technicians in performing scheduled and on‑demand maintenance, repair and inspection of locomotives as required to meet regulatory, quality and customer production needs. Includes but not limited to:

  • Understands and follows company and industry safety rules, uses PPE, operates GATX vehicles safely, ensures safe operating condition before work.
  • Conducts locomotive inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory, industry and customer‑specific requirements, and identifies wear or needed consumables.
  • Removes and replaces defective components on rolling stock (trucks, shoes, coupler assemblies, air brake systems).
  • Repairs rolling stock structural components and fabricates, cuts, and performs rough finish operations on metal.
  • Fastens and assembles parts by riveting, bolting, welding, and other methods.
  • Reads and interprets GATX policies, procedures, engineering instructions, FRA and DOT regulations.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting and cleans work areas.
  • Performs air and brake tests.
  • Operates acetylene torches, non‑power tools, power tools, and electric and gas welding equipment.
  • Communicates technical information and job procedure recommendations verbally and in writing.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance on vehicles, tools and equipment and other tasks as assigned.

2. Customer Support: Meets expectations and requirements of customers and ensures satisfaction.

3. Clerical: Ensures work order information is complete to facilitate accurate and timely billing. Monitors and audits repair work orders, systems and forms.

4. Other: Maintains certifications including TWIC, Houston area safety council, and site‑specific safety training at Gulf Coast customer sites. Demonstrates familiarity with FRA rules. Partners with manager and site personnel to keep certifications, requirements and job expectations current. Pursues advancement to Locomotive Technician 2.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform routine and scheduled maintenance on locomotives, preferably with diesel engine repair experience.
  • Basic welding skills.
  • Willingness to learn basic electrical circuitry and operate testing equipment.
  • Willingness to adhere to FRA rules and regulations, GATX Rail Policies, Safety and Quality procedures, and training.
  • Willingness to learn locomotive inspection and repair; ability to progress to Technician 2.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to meet all customer suitability requirements.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, including weekends, as required.
Other
  • Travel within 150 to 400 miles of work location as necessary.
  • Possibility of overnight travel up to 50% of work duration.
  • Work on call hours.
  • Work Monday‑Friday and Tuesday‑Saturday schedules.
  • Lift up to 90 pounds.
  • Stoop, climb ladders, and perform tasks safely.
  • Work in all weather conditions.

This posting will remain open until the role is filled. The salary range for this position is USD $43,500.00 – $56,375.00 per year. The role is eligible for the Company’s short‑term incentive plan.
