Job summary

GATX in Terre Haute, IN is seeking an Apprentice Railcar Mechanic to learn under a skilled Railcar Mechanic and help repair GATX-owned railcars while completing repair documentation. The role emphasizes safety, accuracy, and hands-on learning in a dynamic environment. The candidate should have a high school diploma and be mechanically inclined with basic hand-tool skills.

Welding training is a plus. Night shift runs Sunday-Thursday 10pm–6:30am with a $1 shift premium; starting wage is $25.00 per

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Welding training or experience is a plus but not required.
  • Mechanically inclined with knowledge of hand tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals and work orders.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Willingness to pursue welding and NDT certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Dismantle, repair, install parts and perform installations on railway cars per procedures.
  • Undertake minor welding work; welding training provided if needed.
  • Operate equipment such as slings, hoists, and forklifts for tasks.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment at all times.
  • Work in confined spaces and at heights; perform outdoors as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

  • Starting hourly wage for this position is $25.00 an hour plus an additional $1.00 an hour for the Night Shift Premium (this position is salary non-exempt meaning still eligible for overtime pay at time and a half after 40 hours).

The Apprentice Railcar Mechanic assists Railcar Mechanic in all aspects of repairing GATX owned railcars, while also learning more advanced skills. Accurately completes required documentation directly related to repairs performed. Reads blueprints, schematics, and interchange rules outlined in MSRP and Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules.

What will you be doing?

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

  • Dismantle, repair, install new parts, and undertake various installations on railway cars according to the procedures and guidelines in force at GATX
  • Undertake minor welding work on rail cars (welding training will be provided as required)
  • Operate equipment such as slings, hoisting chains, forklifts to perform assigned tasks
  • Ensure and maintain a clean and tidy work environment at all times
  • Be able to work in confined spaces and at heights
  • Be able to work out in the elements
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
Qualifications

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (including certifications):

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Formal training or job welding experience is a plus, but not required
  • Mechanically inclined with knowledge of hand tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as repair manuals, instructions, work order, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively individually and/or in a group
  • Initiative: have a personal and autonomous motivation to determine and carry out important tasks
  • Attendance and reliability at work: being able to complete all hours of work, rarely absent and being able to complete all assigned tasks in a reasonable amount of time
  • Willingness to work toward Class C welding certification (2G, 3G, 4G) required
  • Willingness to work toward Air Brake certification required.
  • Willingness to complete the Class B weld test required.
  • Willingness to obtain a Visual Testing - NDT-VT required.
  • Willingness to obtain a Bubble Leak Test certification, either NDT-LT or NDT-BT, required.
  • Willingness to obtain a Magnetic Particle Testing - NDT - MT required.

USD $48,700.00/Yr.

Max

USD $57,500.00/Yr.

This role may be eligible to participate in the Company's short-term incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.

This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
