Job summary

Job Summary

The Locomotive Mechanic II assists in the maintenance, service, and repair of railroad rolling stock and related equipment in a dynamic, fast-paced, and team-oriented work environment. This position includes inspecting and maintaining locomotives in compliance with Part 229 (Locomotive Safety Standards) of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Responsibilities include performing Calendar Day Inspections (CDI) per CFR Part 229.21, 92-Day Inspections per CFR Part 229.25, and assisting with locomotive and equipment repairs. Additional duties include cleaning locomotives and facilities, delivering parts, operating support equipment, and performing basic switching tasks. This role requires availability for on-call emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

• Perform locomotive inspections and maintenance in accordance with CFR Part 229.
• Conduct Calendar Day Inspections (CDI) and 92-Day Inspections.
• Assist with repairs and maintenance of locomotives, cane cars, industrial equipment, and support equipment.
• Clean locomotives, equipment, and servicing areas/facilities.
• Deliver parts and components as needed.
• Operate support equipment such as service trucks, forklifts, and man lifts.
• Perform basic switching duties as required.
• Follow all safety procedures and ensure proper housekeeping standards.
• Be available to assist emergencies, including derailments, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in mobile equipment or vehicle maintenance, or completion of a Heavy Equipment Program at a Technical College.
• Ability to pass the Mechanic 1 Mechanical test with a score of 70% or higher.
• Strong motivation and commitment to safety, efficiency, and reducing equipment downtime.
• Ability to learn and perform maintenance, service, and repair tasks with minimal supervision.
• Clear communication skills and a desire to follow a career advancement path.
• Proficient in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Ability to maintain detailed maintenance records using a computerized management system.
• Capable of performing mathematical calculations and using measurement devices accurately.
• Must provide and use the necessary hand tools and equipment for the job.
• Ability to read, speak, and write English.
• Valid Class E driver’s license or higher.
• Ability to obtain forklift and man lift certification within 30 days of hire.
• Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
• Ability to work in various weather conditions and locations within the company.
