Job summary

US Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division’s Rock Island District, seeks a Lock and Dam Operator for Illinois City and Quincy to ensure safe, reliable operation of 9-foot navigation channels and 18 lock sites. You will operate gates and valves, gather vessel data, and assist with maintenance, under senior staff supervision.

Qualifications include IMTS training/certification and a valid state driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Ability to operate lock and dam equipment where gates/valves are controlled as directed.
• Perform minor repairs to lock and dam equipment as needed.
• Complete IMTS training requirements for WY-07/08 levels.

Responsibilities

• Operate lock and dam gates, control valves, and associated equipment for passage of private and commercial traffic.
• Perform routine installation, repair and maintenance tasks on lock machinery and equipment.
• Gather and record essential voyage data from boat pilots (cargo and travel details).
• Assist in installation, repair and maintenance of lock machinery; perform operational checks to prevent malfunctions.
• Demonstrate and enforce safety regulations to avoid hazards to personnel and vessels.
