Job summary

SQUAN is seeking a Drill Locator in Kent, WA to operate underground locating equipment and guide HDD operations for fiber-optic projects. You will work closely with the HDD Operator and crew to ensure safe, accurate drilling according to plans.

The role requires reading plans, identifying utilities, and maintaining accurate locate records. Candidates should be able to work outdoors in varying weather and maintain strong safety awareness on active sites.

Qualifications

Job description

The Locator is responsible for operating underground utility locating equipment to accurately guide horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations during fiber-optic construction projects. This position works closely with the HDD Operator and construction crew to ensure that underground pathways are drilled safely, accurately, and according to project specifications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Operate electronic locating equipment to track the drill head during horizontal directional drilling operations.
• Monitor and communicate the drill head's depth, position, and direction to the Drill Operator.
• Read and interpret locating equipment displays, utility maps, plans, and construction drawings.
• Identify and account for existing underground utilities and potential obstructions.
• Maintain accurate drill-path information and communicate changes or concerns to the crew.
• Assist with planning and establishing bore paths in accordance with project requirements.
• Maintain communication with the Drill Operator and other crew members throughout drilling activities.
• Conduct pre-drilling site assessments and verify work areas are properly prepared.
• Follow established safety procedures and utility locating requirements.
• Assist with potholing, daylighting, and other activities necessary to safely identify existing utilities.
• Inspect, maintain, and properly use locating equipment and related tools.
• Assist the HDD crew with setup, cleanup, and general construction activities as needed.
• Complete required daily documentation, production reports, and locate records.
• Maintain awareness of changing jobsite conditions, traffic, weather, and other hazards.
• Follow company policies, OSHA requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Previous experience as a Drill Locator, Utility Locator, or HDD Locator preferred.
• Experience in telecommunications, fiber-optic construction, underground utilities, or directional drilling preferred.
• Knowledge of horizontal directional drilling operations and underground utility construction.
• Ability to operate and interpret electronic locating equipment.
• Ability to read construction plans, utility maps, and locate information.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
• Ability to work around heavy equipment and maintain a strong awareness of jobsite safety.
• Valid driver's license required; ability to meet company driving requirements.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

• 1+ year of HDD locating experience.
• Experience with fiber-optic or telecommunications construction.
• Experience using Subsite, DCI, Vermeer, or similar locating systems.
• Familiarity with utility markings, 811 requirements, and underground utility safety.
• OSHA or other relevant construction safety training is a plus.
