Job summary

UNDERWAY FIBERAXIS LLC in Florida is seeking an experienced HDD Locator to join our underground fiber construction team. You will locate and track drill heads, provide depth and direction data, and maintain safe, productive bore paths on active projects across the state.

Ideal candidates have prior HDD/Directional Drill locator experience, knowledge of Digitrak locating systems, and the ability to read construction prints and utility maps.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced HDD Locator / Directional Drill Locator to join our underground fiber construction team in Florida.

This position will support Sedulous Broadband LLC fiber infrastructure projects utilizing Hexatronic conduit and microduct systems.

Responsibilities

• Locate and track the drill head during horizontal directional drilling operations.
• Provide accurate depth, pitch, direction, and steering information to the drill operator.
• Maintain continuous communication with the HDD operator throughout each bore.
• Assist in planning safe and efficient bore paths.
• Read and understand construction prints, utility maps, bore profiles, and project specifications.
• Verify entry points, exit points, handhole locations, and proposed underground routes.
• Identify and account for existing underground utilities before and during drilling operations.
• Assist with potholing and exposing utilities to verify depth and location when required.
• Monitor drill-head depth and direction to maintain the approved bore path.
• Prevent conflicts with gas, electric, water, sewer, telecommunications, and other underground facilities.
• Operate locating equipment such as Digitrak F2, F5, or comparable locating systems.
• Identify signal interference and make necessary adjustments to maintain accurate locating information.
• Assist the drill operator with determining appropriate steering corrections.
• Maintain required utility clearances and bore depths.
• Help coordinate conduit, microduct, and product pullback operations.
• Confirm that the completed bore meets project requirements before product installation.
• Assist with setting handholes, conduit installation, restoration, and general underground construction when needed.
• Document completed footage and provide accurate production information to supervisors.
• Inspect locating equipment before use and report damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
• Maintain batteries, receivers, transmitters, and other locating equipment in proper working condition.
• Follow all company, project, OSHA, utility-owner, and job-site safety requirements.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Communicate any unsafe conditions, unexpected utilities, bore conflicts, or project issues immediately to the drill operator and supervisor.

Qualifications

Required

• Previous experience as an HDD Locator or Directional Drill Locator.
• Experience with underground utility, telecommunications, broadband, or fiber-optic construction.
• Ability to accurately locate and guide an HDD drill head.
• Understanding of depth, pitch, direction, and bore-path calculations.
• Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with the drill operator.
• Ability to read construction prints and underground utility markings.
• Understanding of utility colors, markings, potholing, and safe excavation practices.
• Ability to identify and respond to potential underground utility conflicts.
• Ability to work outdoors in Florida weather and changing job-site conditions.
• Ability to perform physically demanding construction work when necessary.
• Reliable attendance and transportation.
• Valid driver's license for employees required to operate company vehicles.

Preferred

• Experience using Digitrak F2 or F5 locating systems.
• Experience locating for Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or comparable directional drills.
• Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or broadband construction experience.
• Experience installing conduit and microduct systems.
• Experience with Hexatronic fiber infrastructure products.
• Experience working around handholes, pedestals, vaults, and telecommunications infrastructure.
• Knowledge of bore profiles and setback calculations.
• CDL or experience towing construction equipment is a plus.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

• Walk extended distances along active bore routes.
• Stand outdoors for extended periods.
• Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and walk across uneven terrain.
• Lift and carry construction tools, locating equipment, conduit, and materials.
• Work around mud, dust, traffic, noise, heavy equipment, and active construction areas.
• Work safely in hot and humid Florida conditions.

We’re looking for someone who is alert, dependable, safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and confident communicating with the drill operator.

The ideal candidate understands that accurate locating is essential to protecting existing utilities, preventing damages, maintaining production, and completing quality underground installations.

Candidates must be willing to speak up immediately when something does not look right. Production is important, but safe and accurate drilling comes first.

Schedule

This is a full-time, field-based construction position. Work schedules may vary based on project requirements, weather, inspections, production goals, and customer requirements.

• Changing work locations as the fiber build progresses
