Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Local Instrument Operator / Survey Equipment Specialist should have prior civil and pipeline experience and work primarily in the Lexington office under the supervision of the Survey Manager. The successful candidate will manage survey field equipment, provide technical support to field personnel, and perform local survey projects as needed. Responsibilities include processing field data, drawing line work, plotting deeds, and revising plats. The role requires flexibility and occasional overnight travel, with per diem provided if applicable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain and update the survey equipment inventory log.
  2. Issue survey equipment and supplies to field personnel.
  3. Serve as the main contact for survey equipment troubleshooting.
  4. Perform maintenance on all survey equipment.
  5. Schedule quarterly calibration for GPS equipment.
  6. Handle equipment requests.
  7. Ensure adherence to company and project specifications for both conventional and GPS survey methods.
  8. Process field survey data files with project-specific feature codes and attributes using Trimble Business Center (TBC) software, and export data into various formats such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcView, Excel spreadsheets, and CSV files.
  9. Assist survey managers with drawing line work, plotting deeds, and creating or revising plats.
  10. Train field personnel on surveying standards and procedures.
  11. Perform survey work in the field for local projects as needed, with occasional overnight travel and per diem if applicable.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Provide professional and courteous service to employees, clients, and contacts.
  2. Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  3. Exhibit excellent communication and organizational skills.
  4. Be available and flexible to travel overnight as project needs require.
  5. Have proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  6. Possess strong knowledge of pipeline route selection, surveying, construction, and operations/maintenance.
  7. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, topographic maps, tax/parcel maps, plats, and deed descriptions.
  8. Have a strong working knowledge of conventional and GPS survey/mapping equipment and methods.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum of 2 years of direct experience as an Instrument Operator.
  2. Familiarity with pipeline GPS and conventional survey methods.
  3. Knowledge of pipeline construction practices and proficiency with GPS electronic data collection units and conventional survey equipment.
  4. Ability to perform basic equipment repairs or configuration changes independently.
  5. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field is a plus.

Candidates should be local to the Greater Lexington, KY area as this position involves working in the office and occasional travel for projects. Per diem is available for eligible jobs following IRS travel guidelines.
