Job summary

Builders FirstSource, Inc. is seeking a warehouse loader to load/unload materials in the yard or at customer sites and prepare loads for delivery. You will build loads based on weight, placement, and vehicle capacity while following orders and using forklifts or hand trucks.

Applicants should have a GED or high school diploma, at least 3 months of related experience, and forklift certification. The job requires safety awareness and occasional lifting.

Responsibilities

• Transport materials within storage or yard using hand trucks, electric dollies, forklifts, or other devices
• Open containers and load using hand tools and attach labels for correct identification
• Follow safety procedures and participate in safety meetings to prevent injuries

Job description

PURPOSE

Under general supervision, the employee performs routine loading and unloading of materials within the yard or work site and assembles load packages into trucks for delivery to customer job sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trucks, or customer vehicles and installs strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
• Builds loads by determining the appropriate weight, composition, and placement of materials based on the customer order and vehicle capacity to ensure the load is balanced and safe for hauling.
• Reads work orders or follows oral instructions to determine which materials are to be moved or loaded.
• Conveys materials to or from storage to the designated area using a hand truck, electric dolly, forklift, or other device.
• Opens containers, units, slings, and loads using steel cutters, crowbars, claw hammers, or other hand tools.
• Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers to provide correct identification of items.
• Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices to prevent injury to self or co‑workers; attends periodic safety meetings as required and may recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
• Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and three (3) months of experience performing similar tasks, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Forklift certification is required.

COMPETENCIES

• Requires forklift operator certification.
• Knowledge of company products sufficient to consider weight, shape, and handling requirements.
• Ability to read and write to handle work orders and labeling tasks.
• Manual dexterity.
• Ability to use simple hand tools.
• Knowledge of safety procedures while performing forklift driving and materials handling tasks.
• Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions.
• Ability to count items and verify against prepared lists.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

• Work is performed within a production or yard environment, subject to temperature variations, hazardous chemicals, mechanical parts, equipment noise, and dust.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and on occasion up to 80 pounds.
• May be required to perform specific tasks that involve climbing, lifting, pushing, or kneeling.
