Job summary

Smithfield Foods, Inc. is seeking a Herdsperson to support herd technicians and ensure welfare of animals at the designated farm site. Responsibilities include feeding, vaccinating, animal handling, and basic veterinary procedures in a busy livestock environment.

The role requires a valid driving license and a good driving record, physical ability for heavy labor, and flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to do hard physical labor.
• Strong commitment to teamwork.
• Willingness to shower daily in and out of facility.
• Ability to follow instructions and deal with standardized situations.
• Must be able to work an average 48-hour work week, which can vary.
• Weekend, evening, and holiday work required as needed.
• On-call for emergencies including power outages or staff shortages.
• Works well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

• Feed, water, vaccinate, and perform general animal husbandry tasks.
• Move animals and maintain efficient animal flows.
• Sanitize and wash farm areas with high pressure equipment.
• Process piglets (injections, castration, docking tails, ear notching).
• Maintain production records and department logs.
• Treat sick animals with medications as required.
• Follow SOPs and training guides; assist with facility and equipment maintenance.
