Description

Summary: Performs the daily nursing and medical patient treatments, assists veterinarians with emergency cases and maintains ICU facility. This position is a 3 day, 12 hour shift overnight position.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a Certified/Registered/Licensed Veterinary Technician.

Wage and Benefits:

$21-$26 per hour including overnight and weekend shift differential. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, supplemental options, 401k with match, competitive PTO accrual and continued education stipend. Full benefit package available upon request with complete application.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Daily treatments and nursing care of all hospitalized patients including elective procedures, critical care, and isolation.
  • Prepares drugs, fluids, and CRIs for daily treatment.
  • PO, IM, SQ, PR medication administration.
  • Venipuncture including blood draw, IV medication administration, and IV catheter placement.
  • Ability to run bloodwork and recognize abnormalities.
  • Maintain appropriate biosecurity in ICU and isolation areas by cleaning as necessary. Works with veterinarians to implement and enforce biosecurity protocols.
  • Appropriately stock ICU areas with drugs and supplies as needed. Maintains an accurate controlled drug log.
  • Accurately maintain digital medical record; complete paper forms as needed.
  • Assists veterinarians with euthanasia and necropsies as needed.
  • Trains intern veterinarians, technician students, and new employees in ICU/nursing techniques and protocols.
  • Client communication as needed.
  • Maintains current veterinary technician certification/license/registration if applicable.
Qualifications

Education/Experience: Basic level of horse handling experience required. Preference given to credentialed technicians who have graduated from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary technology and successfully completed the VTNE.

Language Ability: Ability to understand both written and verbal instructions regarding patient care and treatments. Ability to appropriately chart patient parameters, subjective observations, and independently utilize provided resources for standard operating procedures. Ability to effectively communicate and respond to questions from managers, doctors, and clients.

Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as drug doses, dilutions, percentages, rate, ratio and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, add subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions.

Computer Skills: Computer literacy in common computer software programs.

Special Skills: Equine restraint/handling and horsemanship skills.

Knowledge of MSDS use and personal protective gear including (but not limited to) gloves, masks, respirators, and eyewash stations are required. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
