Job summary

The City of New York’s Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) seeks an Assistant General Counsel for Litigation and Special Education to advise staff on all litigation-related matters. The role reports to the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel and requires exemplary writing, research, and analytical abilities.

The attorney will have primary responsibility for defending the agency in litigation, working with a team of attorneys and non-attorneys in a fast-paced environment,

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York State Bar with four years of full-time relevant legal experience, including supervisory work.
• Experience with administrative proceedings, litigation, and public sector law is preferred.
• Strong research, writing, and communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Defend the agency in all aspects of litigation and provide strategic legal advice.
• Review and draft pleadings, motions, and legal documents.
• Gather and prepare records for court proceedings and respond to subpoenas.
• Collaborate with the NYC Law Department and City agencies on litigation matters.
