Job summary

1872 Consulting is seeking a Litigation Associate Attorney to join our civil defense practice in Portland. This role provides active participation in depositions, hearings and trial preparation.

The ideal candidate holds a JD and an active Oregon license, with 2–5 years of civil litigation experience and strong writing skills; relocation to Portland with license is welcome.

Qualifications

• JD and Oregon license in good standing.
• 2–5 years civil litigation experience; defense preferred.
• Experience with depositions and dispositive motions.
• Experience in government, public entity, PI or medical malpractice defense a plus.
• Strong, clear legal writing.
• Based in Portland or willing to relocate with Oregon license.

Responsibilities

• Manage files through all stages of litigation from investigation to trial prep.
• Take and defend depositions and prepare witnesses.
• Draft pleadings, discovery, dispositive motions and briefs and argue them.
• Prepare for trial and support the trial team, including witness examinations.
• Work directly with partners who own client relationships.

Litigation Associate Attorney, Civil Defense

Our client is an established civil litigation defense and trial firm with about 100 attorneys across the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Its Seattle office defends public entities, school districts and state agencies, along with personal injury and medical malpractice matters, and the lead partner has more work than the team can handle. This is a seat for an associate who wants to be in depositions, hearings and trial prep now, not in three years.

What you will do

• Manage your own files through every stage of litigation, from investigation and discovery through trial preparation
• Take and defend depositions and prepare fact and expert witnesses
• Draft pleadings, written discovery, dispositive motions and briefs, and argue them
• Prepare for trial and support the trial team, including witness examinations
• Work directly with the partners who own the client relationships

What you bring

• JD and an active Oregon license in good standing
• 2 to 5 years of civil litigation experience; defense side preferred, plaintiff personal injury welcome
• Depositions and dispositive motions on your own files
• Government, public entity, personal injury or medical malpractice defense experience is a plus
• Clear, persuasive legal writing
• Based in the Portland area, or relocating with your Oregon license already in hand
