Job description

  • $120,000 annual salary, paid weekly, with health, dental, and vision coverage starting day one
  • Full-time on-site position at one Alpha campus location: Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Malibu, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; San Francisco, CA; Santa Monica, CA; Seattle, WA; Greenwich, CT; Boston, MA; or New York City, NY (relocation assistance available)
  • 40 hours per week, 100% classroom-based with K-3 students

Your structured-literacy credential — Orton-Gillingham, LETRS, Wilson, IMSE, or a Master's in reading instruction — has opened the door to every K-3 reading position you've pursued. In most roles, it also marked the limit: you executed an existing program and documented results. At Alpha, that credential is simply the entry point. If this difference resonates with you, continue reading.

Alpha has eliminated conventional instruction models. Students progress through academic content independently using AI-adaptive applications. No lectures, no textbooks, no predetermined pacing calendars. Your position represents the one area where human expertise cannot be replaced. You construct 20-minute small-group workshops based on live app performance data; these sessions are intentionally brief, because targeted instruction outperforms duration. You also lead motivational sessions designed to drive 100% of your students toward their weekly app objectives using Alpha's motivational framework (school currency, leaderboards, age-appropriate gamification). You identify a student's miscue during a session, diagnose the underlying phonemic deficit, and redesign the next day's workshop before the school day ends. This is the expectation.

Families enrolled at these campuses have selected Alpha for results, not simply enrollment. Parents review weekly data tracking their child's reading development and they form opinions. You will face direct inquiries about individual student progress, and responses like "they're doing fine" will not suffice. You will need to reference the running record, identify the specific phonemic gap, and describe your instructional response. This level of accountability should energize you, not burden you.

Your initial months focus on establishing credibility in the classroom. Workshops must be engaging, appropriately leveled, and demonstrably effective; student satisfaction and "love your Guide" survey results (target 90%+) provide direct measurement. Once you establish this foundation, your influence expands beyond your immediate classroom: successful approaches with your students become templates for other Alpha campuses, and your diagnostic precision influences reading instruction as Alpha scales. Your work here extends well beyond your classroom walls.

Prior to hiring, you will submit a brief video recording in which you tell an engaging story for young children, and you will complete a full day on campus working directly with K-3 students. Low energy with children will disqualify candidates regardless of credential strength. This is intentional.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Constructing small-group K-3 reading workshops using real-time adaptive-app data, anchored in structured-literacy approaches (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, LETRS, IMSE, or equivalent)
  • Conducting daily motivational sessions that achieve 100% student completion of weekly app objectives using Alpha's motivational framework (school currency, leaderboards, age-appropriate gamification)
  • Analyzing AI-generated performance metrics (fluency trajectories, decoding precision, comprehension indicators) to modify instruction within the same day, not only during planning periods
  • Conducting running records, fluency assessments, and decoding evaluations to generate progress visible in weekly campus data reviews
  • Serving as the approachable, high-energy adult your K-3 students anticipate seeing daily
What You Won’t Be Doing
  • Implementing a commercial reading curriculum, scripted lesson sequence, or district-mandated pacing calendar; you construct lessons directly from student performance data
  • Delivering whole-class lectures; all instruction occurs in small, targeted groups while students complete academic subjects through adaptive applications
  • Serving as a reading consultant, instructional coach for other educators, or district-level specialist; you work in the classroom with children every day
  • Managing a conventional classroom schedule: sequential subject lectures, homework correction, standardized test preparation. Your scheduled time consists of workshops, motivational sessions, and data-informed small groups instead
  • Developing IEPs, 504 plans, or formal diagnostic documentation; student progress is captured in app analytics and your running records, not in special-education compliance paperwork
Literacy Coordinator Key Responsibilities

Deliver quantifiable K-3 reading improvement across phonics, fluency, and comprehension within a campus culture where student outcomes undergo weekly review.

Basic Requirements
  • Structured-literacy certification (Orton-Gillingham, LETRS, Wilson Reading System, IMSE, CERI, Neuhaus, UFLI, or equivalent) OR a Master's degree in reading instruction
  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline, plus 2+ years of full-time K-3 structured reading instruction in a school or clinical environment within the past 5 years, utilizing systematic phonics or structured literacy
  • Proven capacity to create original reading lessons and clearly explain your instructional content and methods, independent of a published program
  • Availability to work in person full-time at an Alpha campus: Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Malibu, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; San Francisco, CA; Santa Monica, CA; Seattle, WA; Greenwich, CT; Boston, MA; or New York City, NY (relocation assistance provided)
  • Readiness to work with all K-3 students (not exclusively struggling readers) and incorporate AI and adaptive-learning technologies into daily instruction as these tools develop
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship
Nice-to-have Requirements
  • Direct experience with AI-powered or adaptive reading systems (e.g., Amira, Lexia, i-Ready, Reading Plus) for instructional planning or student data interpretation
  • Documented history of measurable reading outcomes (fluency increases in WCPM, accuracy gains, decoding level progression) you can quantify specifically
  • Familiarity with diagnostic reading assessments (DRA, DIBELS, AIMSweb) for creating differentiated instructional groups
  • Experience in high-accountability educational settings (independent schools, high-performing charter networks, premium tutoring services with outcome-focused families)
  • Background in performance, youth sports coaching, or other contexts requiring engagement of a K-3 audience beyond traditional reading instruction
