James Madison University is seeking a Linux Systems Engineer to support Linux infrastructure, observability platforms, and the campus email mailing list service. As a member of the Linux Team within IT Systems & Operations, you'll be part of a high-functioning, collaborative, and supportive team, with many years of collective experience, and supportive leadership.

This on-site role includes rotating on-call duties approximately every 5 weeks, with a potential for hybrid work.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience installing, troubleshooting and supporting Linux systems in an enterprise setting.
• Experience deploying and managing observability platforms and related tooling.
• Familiarity with Red Hat Satellite, Ansible Automation Controller, GitLab, LISTSERV, Bitwarden, VMware, Pure Storage, Commvault and AWS.
• Proven ability to implement security best practices and manage vulnerabilities.

Responsibilities

• Platform ownership: administer observability platforms (Elastic, Dell OpenManage Enterprise, Zenoss) and ensure health, uptime and security.
• Linux administration: manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, satellite, Ansible, virtualization and storage assets.
• Service reliability: monitor, respond to incidents, resolve problems and harden security.
• Customer support: provide technical guidance to campus users and stakeholders.
• Documentation and improvement: maintain processes and drive service enhancements.
