Job description

HRL is seeking an experienced Linux Systems Administrator to join the Special Programs IT team in Malibu, CA. The successful candidate will collaborate with other systems administrators located in Malibu and at various locations throughout the United States. A willingness to continue learning new technologies is a must. An active Secret clearance and experience in classified programs are required.

Essential Duties:
  1. Perform a multi-disciplined range of technical system and application activities.
  2. Install, configure, and maintain multiplatform systems hardware, software, and components.
  3. Administer and manage Windows and Linux systems in the operations, engineering, analysis, and test environments.
  4. Maintain Linux systems servers and workstations.
  5. Administer installation of software, hardware, file system management, backups, process control, user administration, and device management.
  6. Resolve a wide variety of complex system failures, troubleshooting software, hardware, and network problems.
  7. Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft Active Directory domains and forests.
  8. Perform system and user account maintenance.
  9. Test and assess security configuration of Windows and Linux servers.
  10. Monitor, evaluate, and optimize system performance.
  11. Analyze, test, and implement security patches and hardening.
  12. Document maintenance actions.
  13. Develop and promote standard operating procedures and conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  14. If required, assist in IT security incident response and documentation.
  15. Participate in internal & external security audits/inspections.
Required Skills:
  • Experience in Linux systems administration.
  • Understanding of multiplatform system hardening (e.g., DISA STIG, SCAP).
  • Experience integrating Linux systems into an Active Directory environment.
  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (8, 9).
  • Experience with Ubuntu Linux (20.04, 22.04).
  • Experience with scripting for task automation (e.g., shell scripting, Python, Perl).
  • Experience with systems management and automation software (e.g., Satellite, Foreman, Ansible).
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (e.g., switching, routing, firewalls, load balancing).
  • Experience with system monitoring & alerting tools (e.g., Nagios).
  • Experience working within an accredited system.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • An active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a related role is preferred.
  • A current Top Secret/SCI security clearance with in-scope polygraph is preferred.
  • Understanding of VMware vSphere virtual environments is preferred.
  • Experience In Multiplatform Environments (Windows And Linux) Is Preferred.
  • Experience with Privileged Access Management platforms (e.g., Centrify, Delinea) is preferred.
  • Experience with file transfer protocols (e.g., SMB, NFS, iSCSI) is preferred.
  • Experience with hardened Linux configurations (e.g., fapolicyd, SELinux) is preferred.
  • Experience With Container Management/orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) Is Preferred.
  • Experience with administration of web and database servers (e.g., Nginx, Apache, MySQL, PostgreSQL) is preferred.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Development tools and pipelines (e.g., GitLab, Artifactory, Terraform) is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of cyber security technology and trends (e.g., least privilege, RBAC, Zero Trust) is preferred.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing, applications, and frameworks is preferred.
  • Understanding of package management tools (e.g., RPM, DEB) is preferred.
Required Education:

High School diploma/GED with 7+ years of experience in a System Administration role or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.

DoD 8570.01-M IAT Level II (or higher) certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, CISSP) within 6 months of hire.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Special Requirements:

This position is 100% on-site.

Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, and in some cases, with little to no advance notice. This job will also require up to 10% travel.

This position requires that the applicant selected be a U.S. citizen and possess an active Secret security clearance. The applicant must also be willing to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance with polygraph.

This position requires that the applicant obtain a DoD 8570.01-M IAT Level II (or higher) certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, CISSP) within 6 months of hire.

As part of your role/function on the program, you will be granted privileged user access, which is subject to greater scrutiny as a direct result of the significant responsibilities. Please be aware that because of these critical duties, you will be subject to additional IT system monitoring and supervisory evaluation to ensure continuous adherence to Privileged User processes and procedures. Privileged Users are subject to a zero-tolerance policy for security violations.

Compensation:

The base salary range for this full-time position is $109,695 - $137,145 + bonus + benefits.

Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
