Job summary

The Institute of Defense Analyses (IDA) in La Jolla, CA has an immediate opening for a Systems Administrator II to provide Linux-based system administration and programming support for CCR La Jolla. The role includes design, maintenance of server infrastructure, and occasional software development assistance.

Responsibilities include configuring Linux desktops/servers, VMware, scripting, automation, security posture, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a similar field with four or more years of system administration experience (three+ years with Linux).
• Experience with open source tools including VMware, Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP, GNU utilities and understanding of Ethernet, TCP/IP and related network protocols.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; good interpersonal skills.
• Project management experience is a plus.
• Must be willing to work hours outside of a regular schedule.
• CompTIA Security+ or equivalent security certification.
• Current TS/SCI with lifestyle polygraph clearance preferred.

Responsibilities

• Install and configure Linux on desktop and server systems; build physical and virtual systems.
• Install and manage VMware virtual servers.
• Apply patches, update system software, and maintain configuration control; monitor and tune systems.
• Write and maintain scripts in shell, Perl, PHP and other languages.
• Automate system administration tasks.
• Manage user accounts and assist users with computing needs.
• Identify security vulnerabilities and implement mitigations; ensure systems meet security standards.
• Assist in system certification and accreditation; maintain documentation and SOPs.
• Build software from source.
• Configure and manage web servers and databases (e.g., MySQL).
• Install and maintain backup and recovery systems; escalate as needed.
• Install and configure network devices and security systems; diagnose networking problems.
• Maintain documentation and records.
