Position Overview

Application Engineering is responsible for the system administration of approximately 1700 managed Linux and Windows servers, application load balancing, web hosting, and product administration for IBM Cognos and Tableau suites.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Provide technical operations and support for the management of over 1000 Linux systems including implementation, support, and maintenance.
  2. Experience in RedHat Linux administration, Ansible, and Puppet is required.
  3. Fluent in network, security, and application administration topics relating to system administration and processes.
  4. Work with MSU's diverse community to find solutions and implement those solutions.
  5. Responsible for escalating issues to vendor support as needed.
  6. Willingness to work outside of standard business hours and be available as part of a 24x7 on-call rotation.
  7. Exceptional customer service skills with superior oral and written communication skills necessary to consult with customers, manage projects, and tactfully manage sensitive situations.
  8. Capable of mentoring and sharing experience and knowledge with other team members.
  9. Maintain and increase technical knowledge through coursework, workshops, independent study, and seminars.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program. Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Experience managing large-scale Linux environments using automation and processes.
  2. Experience in network engineering, security engineering, solution architect, or application development with an understanding of the OSI Model, TCP/IP, SSL offload, Load balancing, SNAT, 2-factor authentication, DNS, IPv6, Wireshark.
  3. Knowledge of logical and physical networks, network security, and application development.
  4. Experience overseeing large, complex, or critical information technology projects.
  5. Ability to analyze and evaluate current and future business procedures or problems to define needs.
  6. Experience in system administration on a large scale through automation tooling.
  7. Experience in containers, DevOps, and automation is a plus.
