Job summary

American Electric Power in the United States seeks an experienced line technician to build, repair and maintain transmission and distribution systems, including overhead and underground work. You will open and close switches, install grounding devices and work with energized conductors following safety protocols.

You will climb poles or ride in a bucket to install or repair wires and hardware, and work on underground facilities such as cables, transformers, potheads and pedestals.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate degree or certificate from electrical power line school with internship.
  • Additional training in electrical safety is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Opens and closes switches and installs grounding devices to lines and equipment.
  • Climb poles and ride in bucket to install or repair wires and hardware on poles.
  • Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals.
  • Installs pole hardware and such auxiliary equipment as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators.
  • May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling without interrupting service.
  • Uses insulated poles (hot sticks) with grasping tools and rubber gloves for energized line work.
  • Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.

WHAT YOU'LL DO: This list is not intended to limit assignment of work or the degree of supervision under all operating conditions. Employee may perform miscellaneous, related, and incidental work in addition to that specifically outlined below.

  • Opens and closes switches and installs grounding devices to lines and equipment.
  • May climbs poles and/or ride in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware on poles.
  • Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals.
  • Installs pole hardware and such auxiliary equipment as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools and mechanical devices.
  • May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service.
  • Uses insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work.
  • Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.
What we're looking for

Education requirements are listed below:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • Minimum of one year distribution electrical power line work experience, OR one year of related line experience defined as: successful completion of a one year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience, or an Associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.

Applicable years of experience will determine appropriate classification.

Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid CDL A state driver's license.

Other Requirements:

  • Must live within 35 mile radius/40 roadway miles of service location.
  • Must have the ability to climb and work at heights.
  • Must have the ability to communicate with employees, customers and the general public in a courteous and proper manner.
  • Must pass the AEP Pre-Assessment Evaluation.
  • Must acquire with such time determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher line of progression or vacate the current job classifications.
Work Hours / Travel Requirements

40 hours per week with overtime and travel as required. Must be available for overtime callout including weekends and holidays. This role requires regular overtime and on-call response. Travel, including out of town travel, may also be required.

Compensation Data

Compensation Grade: U070-925

Compensation Range: $37.23 - $56.36

Physical Demand Level

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
