Job summary

Silver Bay Seafoods in Alaska is seeking a Line Mechanic to maintain, repair, and install processing machinery at our high-volume facility. You will troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems and perform routine maintenance to minimize downtime.

The role requires welding, fabrication, and the ability to work safely around heavy equipment; occasional travel to other processing sites in Alaska may be required during peak seasons.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
• Experience with mechanical maintenance and repair across multiple systems.
• Valid machinery certifications (forklift, expeditor truck, or flatbed truck) and valid driver’s license.
• Experience in Seafood or Manufacturing preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and install Iron Butcher and similar processing equipment to maximize recovery and quality.
• Rebuild pumps, motors, conveyors, and related equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems and perform preventive maintenance.
• Weld and fabricate aluminum and stainless steel as needed.
• Ensure safety compliance and report hazards to supervisor.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and work as part of a team to minimize downtime.

Job description

As the Line Mechanic, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities responsible for maintaining, repairing and installation of Iron Butcher processing machinery and other fish processing equipment including but not limited to food grade conveyors, processing pumps, grinders and a variety of seafood processing equipment. This includes troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, performing routine maintenance tasks, and conducting repairs as needed to ensure optimal equipment performance and minimize downtime.

Position also requires a strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems, as well as experience with various types of processing equipment.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

• Maintain, adjust and repair Iron Butcher and similar heading and gutting machines to achieve maximum recovery and quality.
• Rebuild and maintain pumps, motors, fans and various equipment
• Build, Maintain and Repair hydraulic and pneumatic system components.
• Build, Maintain, and repair conveyors.
• Weld and fabricate aluminum and stainless steel.
• Work in a safe manner and take action to correct or report safety hazards to the Safety Manager or Chief Engineer.
• Recognize operator errors and correct their behavior in a constructive manner.
• Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on all production line equipment, including conveyors, processing machines, packaging equipment, and refrigeration units.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems.
• Perform welding, fabrication, and other metalworking tasks as needed.
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities.
• Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies.
• Work effectively as part of a team to maintain production efficiency.
• May be required to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, during peak production seasons.
• Other duties are to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required.
• Experienced in multiple mechanical skills, including knowledge of millwright, hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, building maintenance, fabricatingand welding processes.
• Position requires driven machinery certifications such as a forklift, expeditor truck, or flatbed truck which in turn requires a valid driver’s license.
• Previous experience in Seafood or Manufacturing preferred, not required.

Work Environment and Schedule

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska.

Physical Demands

This role is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Employees are frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
