Job description

Macdonald & Company has partnered with a Salt Lake City affordable housing developer with more than 50 years in the market. The firm is hiring a Development Manager to help carry a pipeline of 13 active projects, plus a development just awarded and more expected.

The Role:

This isn't a role confined to one lane. The firm wants someone who can move across a project's full lifecycle, whether the background is finance, construction, or architecture. What matters more than the starting discipline is the range built since: candidates should be able to work outside their specialty and go wherever a project needs them that week.

Numbers matter here. The hire doesn't need to be a dedicated finance professional but should read a development pro forma comfortably and pair that with strength in another area: construction, design, project management, or execution more broadly.

The existing team already covers finance, construction, and architecture between its members. This hire rounds that group out, not by adding a specialist, but by adding someone who moves between disciplines the way the rest of the team does.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Run projects across the development lifecycle, from early evaluation through construction and stabilization
  • Handle underwriting, budgeting, and feasibility work
  • Coordinate due diligence, design, entitlements, and permitting
  • Work through affordable housing capital structures and complex project financing
  • Manage architects, contractors, and consultants
  • Track construction budgets, schedules, draws, and milestones
  • Work directly with municipalities, public agencies, lenders, investors, and community stakeholders
  • Solve problems as they surface and step into whatever part of a project needs attention
  • Carry projects through lease-up and stabilization
  • Take ownership of both the major decisions and the unglamorous groundwork that gets a project built
Target Background:
  • Three or more years in real estate development, ideally with time in affordable housing or multifamily.
  • Candidates should be solid in at least two of development finance, construction, or architecture and design, with financial analysis as either a core strength or a strong secondary skill.
  • Experience spanning multiple stages of a project, rather than sitting inside one function, matters more than a specific title history.
  • Beyond the technical base: someone who manages several projects and stakeholders at once without losing track of details, communicates clearly across a collaborative team, and takes a hands-on approach to whatever the day requires. A bachelor's degree in real estate, finance, construction, architecture, planning, or a related field is preferred.
The Draw:
  • A substantial pipeline, a team with complementary strengths to learn from, and real ownership of housing that shapes the Salt Lake City market directly.
