Job summary

BlockReel is seeking a Gaffer for an exciting sci-fi web series set in near-future Brooklyn to bring a grounded, gritty lighting aesthetic to a compelling narrative.

You will be responsible for executing the lighting plan, managing all lighting equipment, and ensuring safety on set, often in practical locations. The role requires a reel or portfolio and own basic lighting gear, with rentals for specialized equipment as needed.

Qualifications

• Solid understanding of lighting principles and mood creation.
• Experience in a lighting department, preferably as Gaffer or Best Boy/Girl.
• Portfolio or reel showcasing lighting work is a plus.

We're looking for a Gaffer for an exciting sci-fi web series set in a near-future Brooklyn, exploring themes of memory and connection with a grounded, gritty aesthetic. This independent production needs someone passionate about bringing visual depth to a story through lighting. It's a fantastic opportunity to collaborate on a compelling narrative. You will be responsible for executing the lighting plan, managing all lighting equipment, and ensuring safety on set. We need someone who can work efficiently to achieve specific moods and looks for our scenes, often in practical locations. We're looking for a creative problem-solver with a strong understanding of lighting principles. You should have your own basic lighting kit, including stands, stingers, and diffusion, but specialized gear will be rented as needed. Applicants should have some prior experience in a lighting department, ideally as a Gaffer or Best Boy/Girl, and a reel or portfolio showcasing your work is a plus. The shoot is planned for late October 2026, running for approximately 3-4 days in Brooklyn, with standard 10-hour days. Craft services and water will be provided on set.
