Job summary

Job description

Join TriMet as a LRV Technician! This position will perform preventative maintenance inspections, repairs, and troubleshooting on light rail vehicles (LRVs), including LRV subsystems and components, for LRV types, including timed contractor DC propulsion technology and state-of-the-art AC propulsion microprocessor-driven technology.

Five (5) days per week onsite are required.

Reliable in-person attendance is an essential function of all positions. TriMet is an in-person first organization, with a strong emphasis on in-person collaboration, customer service, and safe and efficient operations. Some positions may be able to work up to two days remotely depending on department policy, business needs, and manager discretion.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and service offerings.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Inspect, troubleshoot, adjust, and repair subsystems such as propulsion, dynamic brake, friction brake, air conditioning, annunciation circuits, couplers, door systems, and public address/readerboards. Use standard test equipment and laptop computers to locate and diagnose electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical system troubles.
  2. Follow written SOPs, maintenance instructions, blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications.
  3. Practice effective troubleshooting, job layout, productivity, and quality techniques.
  4. Instruct other employees and trainees in repair procedures, troubleshooting, safety, and preventative maintenance techniques as required.
  5. Utilize test equipment such as laptops, diagnostic software, oscilloscopes, megger, hydraulic jacks, and hi-pot testers.
  6. Operate hi-rail vehicles, forklifts, overhead cranes, and perform re-rail procedures for LRVs.
  7. Maintain maintenance logs and records as per TriMet policies.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED required; an Associate's degree in Electronics Technology, Aviation Maintenance, ASE Automotive Service Technology, or related field, or equivalent military training, may be considered.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in electrified rail transit vehicle maintenance or manufacturing, or completion of TriMet's Light Rail Vehicle Technician training program, required.
  • Must pass a written exam, physical exam with drug screen, and meet physical activity requirements.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement and no restrictions on airbrakes; three years of driving experience with a satisfactory record.
  • Knowledge of electrical propulsion, troubleshooting, testing equipment, safety procedures, interpreting plans, and working with live circuits up to 1,000 V.
  • Ability to operate communication systems, maintain reliability, and work various shifts including graveyard.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks as needed.
Position Details:

Union, Non-Exempt, Full-time, wage $43.83/hr effective December 1, 2024, in accordance with the current agreement.
