Job summary

TICO is seeking a Light Industrial Painter to prepare surfaces and apply coatings to metal components in a production environment. You will ensure proper surface prep, mix and apply primers and finishes, and inspect finished work for quality and consistency.

Responsibilities include maintaining tools, following safety procedures, and coordinating with production and maintenance teams to meet schedules. Prior painting experience in industrial settings is preferred and strong attention to detail

  • Basic math skills for measuring, mixing ratios, quantities, coverage, and job documentation.

Job description

Position Summary

The Light Industrial Painter prepares and coats metal components, machinery, equipment, and other manufactured products in a production or maintenance environment. The position is responsible for safe surface preparation, accurate coating application, quality inspection, equipment care, material control, and timely completion of assigned work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean, wash, degrease, scrape, sand, grind, feather, or otherwise prepare surfaces for proper coating adhesion.
  • Remove rust, scale, loose coating, dirt, oil, and other contaminants
  • Select, measure, mix, strain, thin, and agitate primers, paints, and coatings according to approved instructions.
  • Apply primers, intermediate coats, and finish coats with brushes or rollers.
  • Clean and maintain tools and work areas; report damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Handle and dispose of paint waste, solvent, rags, filters, and containers in accordance with site procedures.
  • Coordinate with production, maintenance, quality, and other team members to meet schedule and quality requirements.
  • Perform related duties within training and authorization.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Prior experience in industrial, manufacturing, automotive, marine, maintenance, or production painting preferred.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work orders, safety data sheets, and coating manufacturer guidance.
  • Basic math skills for measuring, mixing ratios, quantities, coverage, and job documentation.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and painting equipment safely.
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Authorization to operate forklifts or other powered equipment when required by the assignment; employer-provided qualification or certification may be required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of common substrates, primers, enamels, epoxies, urethanes, and other coatings used at the facility.
  • Understanding coating compatibility, pot life, viscosity, cure time, environmental limits, and recoat windows.
  • Ability to produce a consistent finish while controlling material use,
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions, stop work when necessary, and promptly report hazards or spills.
  • Effective communication, organization, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to maintain legible production, inspection, and material records.
Safety Requirements
  • Follow all company rules and applicable requirements for spray finishing, ventilation, flammable and combustible materials, respiratory protection, eye and face protection, hazard communication, and personal protective equipment.
  • Wear assigned PPE, which may include safety glasses or goggles, face protection, gloves, protective clothing, safety footwear, hearing protection, and an approved respirator.
  • Complete any required medical evaluation, fit testing, and respiratory-protection training before using a tight-fitting respirator.
  • Read labels and safety data sheets before using coatings, hardeners, thinners, cleaners, or other chemicals.
  • Maintain ignition-source control, bonding and grounding, proper ventilation, and approved storage practices where required.
  • Use ladders, platforms, lifts, blasting equipment, and powered tools only when trained and authorized.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, confined-space, fall-protection, hot-work, and emergency procedures when they apply to the assigned work.
  • Immediately report injuries, exposures, fires, spills, damaged equipment, and unsafe conditions.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, grasp, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
  • Safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and use assistance or mechanical handling for heavier or awkward items, subject to the employer's job analysis.
  • Climb approved ladders or work platforms when assigned and maintain balance while using tools.
  • Use sufficient vision, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination to prepare surfaces and apply uniform finishes.
  • Wear required PPE for the duration necessary to complete assigned tasks.
Work Environment and Schedule
  • Work may be performed in a shop, warehouse, production area, maintenance area, or covered outdoor location.
  • Regular exposure may include paint and solvent odors, airborne particles, noise, heat, humidity, moving equipment, and temperature changes; controls and PPE must be used as required.
  • Work must be performed around other trades and operating equipment with continuous awareness of traffic and restricted areas.
Performance Expectations
  • Meet coating specifications and acceptable appearance standards.
  • Complete work safely, correctly, and within established production times.
  • Minimize defects, rework, overspray, waste, and equipment downtime.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and proper material identification.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and ready for inspection.
