Job summary

The City of Perrysburg is seeking a skilled maintenance operator to manage water distribution and wastewater systems. Job description

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST TAKE AND PASS A CIVIL SERVICE TEST SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2025 (1:00 - 3:00 PM). FURTHER DETAILS WILL BE SENT TO EACH APPLICANT PRIOR TO THE TEST DATE.

Summary of Duties:
Under direction, operates equipment and performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, operations, and repair of water distribution, wastewater collections, and stormwater systems. May fill in as the crew leader, as needed.Essential Functions of the Position:
• Operates, maintains, and repairs pumping stations and related equipment in the water distribution system (e.g., taps, hydrants, valves);
• Makes water taps, installs customer meters, and repairs breaks in water mains and services;
• Conducts routine preventive maintenance inspections of water and wastewater systems;
• Assists in the repair and rebuilding of pumps, motors, and mechanical equipment;
• Maintains and repairs catch basins and storm sewers;
• Operates Vactor truck for cleaning sewer mains and CCTV truck for video inspection;
• Disassembles, repairs, recalibrates, reassembles and tests water meters;
• Installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains fire hydrants;
• Operates heavy equipment and can be the Competent Person on excavations;
• Responds to emergency calls and interacts with the public;
• Inspects pumping stations and related equipment in the water distribution and sewer collection systems;
• Performs cleaning and maintenance of buildings and grounds;
• Completes work orders, writes reports, and notes any operating deficiencies and maintains pumps, valves, and other equipment;
• Performs minor electrical repairs.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
• Required to be on-call 24/7 days in a shift rotation;
• Other duties assigned by supervisors.

Residency Requirement: Ability to respond within one hour.An example of acceptable minimum qualifications:
• High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent certificate;
• Two years of utility or related experience preferred;
• Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement andbe eligible for coverage under the City’s vehicle insurance provider.

Minimum Acceptable Characteristics:
• Operate a computer and/or tablet;
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, City GIS, and Ohio EPA regulations;
• Skill in grounds maintenance, landscaping, painting, elementary electrical work, and use of hand tools;
• Ability to read and interpret documents, construction plans, and safety rules;
• Ability to write routine reports, speak effectively, and perform basic math;
• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form;
• Ability to follow directions, get along with others, adhere to safety rules and regulations, maintain a professional appearance, and interaction with the public.

Equipment Operated:
Examples include cars, trucks, crane truck, forklift, GPS Units, Vactor, pump testing equipment, single and tandem axle dump trucks, and other heavy equipment.

Residency Requirement: Ability to respond within one hour.
