Job summary

The City of Grand Rapids is seeking a skilled automotive/heavy equipment technician to perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel engines across department vehicles.

You will prepare work orders, requisition parts, and coordinate with other crews to ensure timely service and safe operation of city equipment, including light-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized machinery.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with automotive/heavy equipment training.
  • At least two years of related automotive/heavy equipment repair experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair city vehicles for various departments.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, steering, braking, engine, and transmission systems.
  • Fabricate, install, and repair auxiliary equipment like compressors and plows.
  • Prepare work orders and requisition parts and equipment.

Job description

The purpose of this job is toperform preventive maintenance, inspection and repairs to a variety of types of automotive, medium and light motor equipment with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines. Responsible for preparing work orders and the requisition of parts and equipment for repair

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Maintains and repairs other City vehicles for a variety of departmental functions
  • Diagnoses and repairs all systems, i.e. electrical, hydraulic, steering, braking, engine systems and transmissions, etc.
  • Fabricates, installs and repairs of auxiliary equipment, i.e. compressors, plows, spreaders, generators, equipment trailers, etc.
  • Performs related work as required
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent) with training in automotive/heavy equipment/light equipment, gasoline or diesel engine repairs
  • At least two (2) years of related work experience performing automotive/heavy equipment/small engine mechanical repair and maintenance; and/or state certifications
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Preferred Licenses or Certifications
  • ASE Certification Preferred
Knowledge of:
  • English grammar, spelling, punctuation
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Standard practices, methods, theory, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades.
  • Principles of operation of internal combustion engines and the characteristics and maintenance needs of a variety of light and medium gasoline and diesel automotive equipment and motor vehicles
  • Occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance and repair and of relevant safety standards and precautions.

Skill in:
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
  • Diagnostics, troubleshooting and repair of electronics issues
Ability to:
  • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
  • Use manuals and equipment to perform inspections, and adjustments, and to diagnose defects and maintenance and repair requirements in a variety of maintenance and construction heavy equipment as well as in general automotive equipment
  • Use and maintain bench and hand tools, and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Troubleshoot a variety of repair issues
