Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Lifeguard should be able to motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics, effectively communicate with members, parents, and students, and exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.
  2. Prevent accidents by scanning assigned zones from bottom to top and covering zones in compliance with the 10/10 rule.
  3. Perform swim tests as required by association policy.
  4. Enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness.
  5. Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  6. Create a welcoming, nurturing, and genuine environment for all members and guests.
  7. Develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  8. Work collaboratively with other staff as part of a team.
  9. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  10. Perform routine maintenance of pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness.
  11. Check pool and rescue equipment and report any issues promptly.
  12. Set up and put away equipment for recreational swims.
  13. Participate in and satisfactorily complete in-service trainings.
  14. Uphold the core values of the YMCA in interactions within the YMCA facilities and community.
  15. Work scheduled shifts; prior approval for substitutes from the Aquatics Director is required.
Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must pass an advanced swimming and rescue skills test. YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross lifeguard certification is required. Candidates must be at least 15 years old and possess the ability to exercise mature judgment, relate positively yet firmly to people, be observant, safety-conscious, react calmly and quickly in emergencies, communicate effectively about YMCA programs, lift at least 50 lbs, and have full body mobility. Certifications in Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED must be obtained and maintained.
