Under direction, supervises, monitors, and coordinates personnel, daily operation, and maintenance activities of the Town's Parks & Recreation Department, Lifeguard division.
- Ensures the health and safety of employees and patrons.
- Duties may include seasonal maintenance work such as heavy cleaning, operating hand power tools, painting, light landscaping, and operating small machinery.
- Maintains records and reports on daily attendance and maintenance.
- Performs routine water tests and makes necessary adjustments to pool chemicals.
- Prepares pool and facility for opening and/or closing of the day.
- Maintains cleanliness of pool and facility.
- Supervises day-to-day activities, including communicating, scheduling work, training, evaluating, and motivating staff.
- Assists with ordering chemicals and supplies.
- Ensures chemicals are stored properly and in the appropriate feeders.
- Identifies and removes safety hazards.
- Maintains vigilance awareness training standards.
- Operates and performs preventative maintenance on pool equipment, focusing primarily on the pump room.
- Responds to emergency situations by performing First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguard Rescue Techniques.
- Assists with personnel actions such as selection, promotion, discipline, and evaluations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to enforce pool regulations fairly and consistently.
- Organizational skills to set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on work with minimal supervision.
- Emergency response skills, including rescuing drowning victims and administering CPR and First Aid.
- Customer service techniques and methods.
- Management and supervision principles, with strong leadership skills.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations related to pool facilities.
- Pool maintenance and operation techniques.
- Knowledge of Town and Department policies and procedures.
- High School diploma or GED.
- One (1) year experience as a Lifeguard.
- One (1) year supervisory experience.
- Oxygen Administration certification.
- Current Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications; must be maintained.
- Within 90 days of hire, obtain associated safety certifications.
- Advanced aquatic certifications such as Lifeguarding Instructor are preferred.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to communicable diseases associated with first aid procedures.
- Work in indoor and outdoor environments with temperatures exceeding 110°F.
- Frequent exposure to chemical hazards, including calcium hypochlorite and muriatic acid.
- Occasional exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards from pool equipment.
- Frequent exposure to noise and vibration from pool equipment.
- Seasonal exposure to wetness, humidity, and extreme temperatures.
- Ability to lift or move over fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to swim 300 yards, demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke techniques.
- Regular attendance is essential.
