Job description

Lifeguard - Summer Sleepaway Camp 2025 (Temporary)

Join us as a Lifeguard at Summer Sleepaway Camp 2025 with Girl Scouts of Greater New York.

Position Overview

Lifeguards ensure the safety of campers and staff at the lake waterfront and pool. They organize supplies and lead activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating for campers aged 8-17. All duties are performed in accordance with NYDOH, GSUSA, and ACA standards, reflecting the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure safety and enforce water safety rules for all on camp property.
  • Monitor and conduct safety checks of the pool and lake waterfront daily.
  • Lead boating and fishing activities, providing instructions to campers and staff.
  • Assist with swimming ability assessments and safety drills.
  • Maintain safety equipment and record water quality tests.
  • Report incidents and assist in emergencies; training provided.
  • Participate in camp activities, staff training, and team building.
  • Model camp expectations and adhere to policies and values of Girl Scouts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 18 years old by July 1, 2025.
  • Current Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard certification or willingness to obtain it.
  • Experience in lifeguarding and working with youth preferred.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors and work with diverse backgrounds.
  • Physical ability to perform lifeguard skills, including swimming and lifting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Camp experience and interest in outdoor activities.
  • Interest in Girl Scout programs and youth leadership.
Employment Details

Work dates include staff training from June 29 to July 5, with summer programming from July 6 to August 8, and camp cleanup on August 9-10. Additional weekend shifts may be available. Compensation ranges from $120 to $160 per day, including room and board, with travel expenses covered.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift 40 pounds, stand/walk for long periods, and swim 300 yards continuously. Reasonable accommodations can be provided for disabilities.
