Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is seeking a Lifeguard to supervise pool areas and preserve a safe, engaging environment for members. You will follow YMCA policies, perform safety checks, and assist with swimming instruction as needed.

Responsibilities include surveillance, emergency response, record-keeping, and training support. Must be at least 15, hold current lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid certifications, and be willing to pursue Red Cross/YMCA coursework.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 15 years or older.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
• Current Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent.
• If not lifeguard certified, take the course with the Y; reimbursement after 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Maintain active surveillance of the pool area.
• Respond immediately to emergencies per YMCA policies and safe-in-six, completing required reports.
• Maintain positive relationships with members and staff.
• Apply pool and aquatic area safety rules and guidelines consistently.
• Keep accurate records as required by YMCA and health codes.
• Perform equipment checks and ensure supplies are available as needed.
• Attend staff meetings and training; assist peers and provide training when needed.
• Willing to teach lifeguarding classes and group/private swim lessons as needed.

Job Title: Lifeguard

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Part Time

Job Grade: 4, $13.11 - $16.37/hour

Reports to: Aquatics Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the "safe-in-six" model. Completes related reports as required.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the State Health Department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
• Assists lifeguards with any questions or concerns they may have as well as provides additional training when needed.
• Willing to instruct lifeguarding classes under the Red Cross platform
• Willing to instruct group and private swim lessons when necessary.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately and in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the "safe-in-six" model. Completes related reports as required.

• If you are not lifeguard certified, take the course with the Y! After working with us for 90 days, you may be eligible for reimbursement for the certification.
