Job description

The work involves responsibility for looking after the safety and welfare of bathers at a public swimming pool. The work is carried out in accordance with well-established standard water safety and lifesaving practices and procedures and involves primarily the patrol of the swimming area at a public pooland remaining vigilant at all times for emergencies requiring his/her attention. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking recreation employee or program administrator with leeway allowed and expected for the exercise of independent and sound judgment in emergency situations. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

1. Stands watch or patrols swimming poolarea, keeping bathers within bounds and going to their aid when they are in difficulty;
2. Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid as needed;
3. Instructs beginners in swimming;
4. Keeps the poolarea free of glass and other debris;
5. Keeps order among swimmersand enforces poolrules; and
6. Other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

1. Good knowledge of first aid, lifesaving, and rescue work as applied to accidents in and around the water;
2. Ability to swim well;

5. Ability to make simple reports;
6. Excellent powers of observation;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Current high school student or high school graduate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S)

Possession of appropriate, valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid, and CPR certificates are required at time of appointment.
