Description
Everyone knows the pool is the coolest place to be in the summer. Join our Aquatics Team to make sure everyone can enjoy the pool in a safe and welcoming environment. Whether you’re a lifeguard, a swim instructor, or a little bit of both, you’re going to love working in aquatics at the Y because you’re helping swimmers feel confident and gain experience in the water. No lifeguard experience? No problem, we’ll train you!
Position Description
To provide for the welfare and safety of all participants in and around the swimming pool.
Responsibilities
- Maintain current CPRPR/AED/O2 and First Aid certifications, renewed annually.
- Complete Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire and renew annually.
- Stay alert to dangerous situations to ensure swimmer safety.
- Be physically able to move and use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200-pound person.
- Read, write, and perform basic math.
- Remain alert in humid and hot conditions.
- Move around the pool area and elevated lifeguard station.
- Communicate verbally effectively, projecting voice across distances.
- Handle irate individuals professionally.
- Perform rescue and lifesaving skills as needed.
- Record incidents on report forms.
- Prevent accidents by enforcing safety procedures.
- Attend monthly in-service training.
- Follow all safety policies, pool rules, and health codes.
- Be on duty and prepared 10 minutes before shift, keep track of hours.
- Arrange for qualified substitutes if needed, with approval from the Aquatic Director or Coordinator.
- Follow daily pool maintenance duties and secure pool when closed.
- Attend required training or certification events.
- Maintain a professional presence on deck, projecting authority and concern for pool users.
- Wear rescue equipment, staff uniform, and whistle while on duty.
- Report unsafe equipment or conditions to the supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Director.
- Develop meaningful relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.
Effect on End Results
The success of this role is measured by staff morale and effectiveness, safety, program coordination, public relations, record accuracy, and facility cleanliness.
Minimum Requirements
- Certified in CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid (training provided if needed).
- At least 16 years old.
- YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent from a recognized organization.
- Demonstrates caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Ability to positively relate with pool patrons.
- Professional, alert, courteous, and tactful.
- Serious about responsibilities, able to think clearly in emergencies.
- Strong swimming skills and maintained physical fitness.
Salary
Starting at $11.50 per hour
