Position Overview
Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and/or Head Lifeguard, the Lifeguard is responsible for providing a safe environment for all participants in and around the pool. This includes responding to emergencies and administering CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen effectively according to certifications. Lifeguards must be alert, identifiable at all times, and maintain a professional appearance. They must work efficiently in all aspects of the aquatic department as assigned and exhibit behaviors and attitudes aligned with the YMCA Mission and policies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Practice preventative lifeguarding by following and enforcing pool rules and policies promptly, completing routine checks of the pool and deck area regularly throughout their shift.
- Check required safety equipment at the start of each shift and report any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designee immediately.
- Secure the pool area at all times, including locking/unlocking doors and gates to control access to the aquatic areas.
- Maintain cleanliness and chemical balance of the pool on appropriate recording forms. Report any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designee immediately.
- Provide undistracted supervision of the pool while on duty, demonstrating vigilant scanning every 10 seconds across 180 degrees, checking the bottom, middle, and top of their zone.
- Understand and perform rescues and emergency procedures, document accidents on proper forms, and communicate to the Aquatic Director or designee as outlined in the EAP promptly and in accordance with policies and certification requirements.
- Clean and store equipment properly, ensuring the pool deck and surrounding areas are clean and free of clutter and trash.
- Perform additional functions or responsibilities as needed or as requested by the Program Director or supervisor.
- Engage in positive public relations with participants, members, and guests to ensure a positive experience.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Director and/or Head Lifeguard.
- Adhere to the Association's operating policies and procedures, operating programs within set guidelines.
- Follow YMCA policies regarding safety, health, and welfare of members, participants, guests, and staff; respond to emergencies per facility policies and certification requirements.
- Attend and actively participate in all trainings, staff meetings, in-services, and guard drills as assigned.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Required
- Must be at least 15 years old.
- If 15 years old, must work with an 18+ year-old lifeguard unless an Aquatic Director or Full-Time Pool Manager is on site during the entire shift.
- Proficient in swimming, as determined by passing a swim test.
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Represent the YMCA positively.
Certifications/Trainings Required
- Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification including Oxygen. (If holding YMCA Lifeguard certification, must crossover to ARC within 60 days of employment.)
- Must possess and maintain current CPR/AED (per Lifeguard certification), First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
- May be asked to acquire additional certifications as required by the Aquatics Director or designee.
