Description

GENERAL FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Lifeguard should motivate others in self-awareness and confidence through swimming and aquatics, effectively communicate with members, parents, and students, and exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.
  2. Prevent accidents by scanning assigned zone from bottom to top and covering zone in compliance with the 10/10 rule.
  3. Perform swim tests as required by association policy.
  4. Enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness.
  5. Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  6. Create a welcoming, nurturing, and genuine environment for all members and guests.
  7. Develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  8. Work effectively as part of a team.
  9. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  10. Perform routine maintenance of pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness.
  11. Check pool and rescue equipment and report any issues promptly.
  12. Set up and put away equipment for recreational swims.
  13. Participate in and complete in-service trainings.
  14. Uphold the YMCA's core values when dealing with people within the facilities and community.
  15. Work scheduled shifts; arrangements for substitutes must be approved in advance by the Aquatics Director.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Candidates must pass an advanced swimming and rescue skills test. YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross certification is required. Must be at least 15 years old, able to exercise sound judgment, relate positively and firmly, be observant, safety-conscious, react calmly in emergencies, communicate effectively about YMCA programs, lift at least 50 lbs, and have full body mobility. Certifications in Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED must be maintained.
