EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Seasonal; Variable
STATUS: Hourly; Non-Exempt
HOURS: Camp Season
COMPENSATION: Paid biweekly

SUMMARY: Each lifeguard plays an important role in our Summer Camp Program. We are looking for individuals to teach fundamental swimming techniques based on the American Red Cross swim levels while ensuring the safety of each camper. Lifeguards at Camp J are led by a Head Lifeguard and are responsible for providing a safe environment to improve swimming abilities for campers ages 5-13 (kindergarten through middle school).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Give a 9-week summer commitment (June 2-August 1).
  • Ensure campers’ safety at all times.
  • Follow and promote all policies and philosophies in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and the public on and off site.
  • Demonstrate a high quality of work standards and ethics.
  • Under the direction of the Camp Director and Head Lifeguard, implement behavior modifications as described in the Camper’s Code of Conduct.
  • Administer first aid in the event of injury; rescue swimmers in distress or in danger of drowning; administer CPR if necessary.
  • Warn campers of unsafe/unruly behavior and enforce water safety policies.
  • Assist in maintaining general cleanliness of the pool and adjoining areas, including the pool deck and changing rooms.
  • Maintain order and safety on the pool deck.
  • Provide clear instruction and guidance to improve swimming abilities of each camper; teach fundamental techniques based on the American Red Cross swim levels.
  • Encourage campers to meet their swim goals and refine their skills.
  • Assist Head Lifeguard in completing weekly swim evaluations for all campers.
  • Supervise canoeing and other water-related activities on campus, as directed by the Head Lifeguard.
  • Accompany camp groups on field trips requiring lifeguard supervision, as directed by the Camp Director.
  • Assist Senior Counselors in managing camper behavior.
  • Use learned positive reinforcement methods in managing camper behaviors.
  • Assist in other areas of campus and/or with groups during “off-periods” and inclement weather during which campers may not use the pool or lake.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Wear staff shirt and appropriate swimsuit daily— shirts provided for each staff member.
  • Be prepared to assist in any emergency situation involving a camper.
  • Communicate with Camp Director regarding incidents or issues that arise.
  • Honor confidentiality of the Shanna & Bryan Glazer JCC.
  • Stay up-to-date with all procedure and policy changes.
  • Support the mission of the Shanna & Bryan Glazer JCC: support and enrich the continuity of Jewish life and values in our community.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Camp Director.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Experience working with school age children, strongly preferred (ages 5-12).
  • Possess First Aid/CPR and AED certification.
  • Possess American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • Possess American Red Cross Swim Instructor certification (BSI) or (WSI), preferred.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Ability to complete counselor orientation, drug screening, background check, and First Aid/CPR class.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, effectively with staff and campers.
  • Ability to make sound decisions that support the mission and are in the best interest of every camper.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Multi-tasking and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and plan accordingly.
  • Adaptability, as planned activities and events may need to change unexpectedly.
  • Creativity and the ability to take initiative to keep campers engaged throughout the day.
  • Ability to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. Occasionally he/she is required to sit. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift up to 40 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Summer camp employees may be outdoors in a nature type setting or in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time.
