Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a Lifeguard to monitor and safeguard pool areas, enforce rules, and assist with aquatic programs. You will provide first aid, CPR, and rescue when needed, while maintaining facility cleanliness and safety protocols.

Applicants should be able to work shifts and communicate effectively with staff and patrons. Preferred candidates hold Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certifications, plus AED, Oxygen Administration, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Lifeguard experience preferred.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED.
  • Oxygen Administration certification.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Meet health and safety regulations defined by the Health Department.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce Red Shield rules to provide a safe environment for all members and visitors.
  • Analyze situations and adopt quick, effective actions.
  • Monitor the swimming area from towers to identify danger.
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
  • Provide first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR when needed.
  • Inspect and maintain pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, and equipment storage.
  • Maintain records and reports.
  • Assist with swimming lessons as directed.
  • Follow and enforce the equipment checkout program; report defects.
  • Wear professional attire and maintain a strong, helpful presence.

Job description

Job Overview

The Lifeguard will monitor activities, observe and provide assistance to swimmers, prevent accidents, protect life, and enforce regulations as well as control access to pools and locker rooms. Provide first aid when necessary. Assist swimming instructors in teaching swimming lessons and other aquatic programs. The position also requires general facility maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Considerately and patiently enforce Red Shield rules to provide a safe environment for all members, visitors, and employees. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas and actions. Maintain order in swimming areas.
  • Must be able to analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action.
  • Patrol and monitor the swimming area and from towers to maintain constant observation of an assigned area to identify any signs of danger.
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
  • Provide first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR when needed.
  • Inspect and maintain the cleanliness of swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, trash cans, cleaning equipment, aquatic equipment storage areas, and other areas as assigned.
  • Maintain records and reports assigned.
  • Assist with swimming lessons as directed.
  • May work with any aspect of aquatic programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co‑workers and customers in person and over the phone.
  • Carry out The Salvation Army mission in actions and words during employment.
  • Perform set up and breakdown of facility equipment as needed.
  • Follow and enforce the equipment checkout program; report defects and necessary repairs.
  • Ensure all equipment assigned to the aquatic facilities is maintained and properly inventoried on a regular basis.
  • Must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Aquatics Manager and always exhibit a professional appearance while on duty.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 15 years of age (required).
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Experience as a lifeguard (preferred).
  • Must maintain current certification in the following prior to starting employment unless otherwise noted:
    1. American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
    2. American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification to include AED.
    3. American Red Cross Oxygen Administration certificate.
    4. American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Meet all health and safety regulations defined by the Health Department and The Salvation Army.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, including mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts.
  • Ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling, and education.
EQUIPMENT USED
  • Modern office equipment and relevant software.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must maintain minimum fitness level to accomplish:
    • 500-yard swim in less than 15 minutes.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes without the use of hands.
    • Position requires proficient swimming ability and endurance. Must perform proper rescue and first‑aid techniques; extract victims from the pool to the deck; lift and carry at least 50 lbs.; sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, jog, pull, push; maintain balance; reach and use fingers and hands.
    • Ability to remain alert for long periods of time.
    • Must be in good physical health, capable of meeting the demands of all aquatic areas.
