Job description

Job Title: Lead Lifeguard

The full-time Lead Lifeguard is a skilled position with above-average difficulty in lifeguarding and swim instruction at a municipal pool. The employee in this role is responsible for supervising and instructing swimming and recreational activities at a City swimming pool, as well as assisting in the oversight of facility operations. This includes ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the pool for patron safety and enjoyment.

This supervisory position oversees all Lifeguard staff and activities within the facility. Responsibilities include supervising subordinate staff and pool patrons, ensuring routine maintenance such as cleaning restrooms and trash, and assisting with staffing schedules for various programs.

Days/Hours

Tuesday - Friday: 1 PM - 9:30 PM
Saturday: 7 AM - 3:30 PM (schedule may include weekends, holidays, evenings, rotating shifts)

Essential Duties
  1. Ensure the safety of patrons utilizing swimming and fitness facilities.
  2. Oversee routine maintenance, including cleanliness and safety equipment checks.
  3. Create staff schedules for various programs with assistance from the Aquatics Coordinator or designee.
  4. Coordinate with the Coordinator to facilitate the needs of groups such as swim teams, dive teams, water polo, and outside training groups.
  5. Create daily rotation schedules.
  6. Assist front desk staff and other customer service areas as needed, including registration and payment software (Rec Trac).
  7. Implement staff in-service training and maintain staff certifications.
  8. Assist with scheduling facility events and training sessions for visiting teams/groups.
  9. Assist with pre-employment skills testing.
  10. Disseminate information to all aquatics staff in collaboration with supervisory staff.
  11. Help set up and oversee events as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three to four years of lifeguard experience.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification required within 1 year of hire.
  • CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety Instructor certifications required to teach swim lessons.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) certification preferred within 1 year of hire.
  • Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification required within 1 year of hire.
  • Experience lifeguarding at an outdoor pool and passing the skills test (swimming 400 yards/meters, CPR, rescue breathing, choking responses).
  • Preferred certifications include Aquatics Facility Operator and Lifeguard Instructor.
Work Environment

The work environment involves typical risks associated with city swimming pools, including equipment use, trips and falls, and adherence to fire and safety regulations.
