Qualifications

Hillsborough YMCA is seeking a Community Safety/Lifeguard Instructor to teach the American Red Cross lifeguarding course to our community members and staff. Our lifeguard instructors help participants to achieve their goals in feeling confident with lifeguarding and life-saving skills.

Hours: Varies based upon number of class offerings

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Teaches potential lifeguards to the Red Cross standard and evaluates the objectives of each rescue and CPR. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  1. You will teach the following classes:
  • Lifeguard training (full classes)
  • Lifeguard review
  • Oxygen (not mandatory)
  • CPR/AED and First Aid

General Functions:

  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Maintains a safe, instructional, and supportive environment.
  • Emotional resiliency and cognitive abilities to carry out job responsibilities, ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups respecting social and cultural diversity and to maintain appropriate boundaries.

Other Duties:

  • Arrives to work five (5) minutes before shift starts.
  • Wears appropriate and professional uniform/attire.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum age of 18.
  2. Must be an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor to include CPR/AED/First Aid/Oxygen (Oxygen not mandatory).
  3. Must have experience teaching American Red Cross training classes.
