Job summary

YMCA of Greenville is seeking a Lifeguard Instructor to ensure pool safety and deliver quality aquatics instruction for members, guests, and program participants.

The role emphasizes teaching, class prep, and testing, with a strong focus on safety, policy enforcement, and customer service. This part‑time position includes benefits through the YMCA program and requires current ARC Lifeguard Instructor, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.

Qualifications

• Current American Red Cross lifeguard instructor certification, CPR, First Aid and AED certification.
• Able to teach and communicate aquatics skills to participants.
• Able to communicate and enforce policies and procedures to members, program participants, and guests.
• Able to react quickly and properly in emergency situations.
• Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Must complete New Staff Orientation and Blood Bourne Pathogen training within first 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare to teach the assigned class and greet participants daily.
• Provide timely, accurate feedback on progress and skills.
• Prepare participants to meet course objectives.
• Adapt teaching to participants' experience and abilities; identify who needs help.
• Conduct written and practical testing for lifeguard classes.
• Maintain a professional uniform and service to members and guests.
• Keep area clean, safe, stocked and organized; report equipment needs.
• Inform supervisor of issues and handle concerns promptly.
• Ensure all requests by members/guests are answered accurately and promptly.
• Return all equipment to proper places after use; maintain required certifications.

• Prepared to teach the assigned class. Greets and welcomes participants to class each day. All equipment and instructional methods are appropriate for the class.
• Provides timely and accurate feedback to participants about their progress and skills they need to work on.
• Prepares participants to meet the course objectives.
• Adapting your teaching approach to match the experience and abilities of the participants, identifying participants who are having difficulty and developing effective strategies to help them meet course objectives.
• Conducts written and practical testing for lifeguard classes.
• Wears required uniform to convey a professional appearance.
• Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
• Maintains a clean, safe, fully stocked and well organized work area.
• Keeps supervisor informed of any equipment needs or concerns.
• Handles and resolves concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
• Provides accurate, appropriate, and immediate responses to all requests by members/guests.
• Leaves the instructional area in a clean and orderly condition by ensuring all equipment is returned to its appropriate area.
• Maintains required instructional certifications.
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
• Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
• Follow mandated reporting requirements
• Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities

Shifts May Vary
