JOB SUMMARY
As a Lifeguard Instructor, you will be responsible for conducting Lifeguard trainings and in services in accordance with certification standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Instruct Lifeguard trainings for the YMCA, according to the guidelines of the American Red Cross.
- Ensure participants learn the concepts and skills necessary to become certified, signing off on certifications for those who have successfully completed the written and physical components.
- Create a welcoming and supportive class environment.
- Clean equipment used during the training and ensure that it is in good working condition. Inform your supervisor if additional supplies need to be ordered, or if equipment needs repair.
- Know and follow the center Emergency Action Plan.
- Assist first responders as needed in rescue situations.
- Attend required staff trainings and meetings. Maintain required certifications.
- Communicate with the Aquatics Directors regarding the progress of the class and its participants, as well as any concerns/problems associated with the Lifeguard course.
- Assist participants in applying for open positions at the conclusion of the course.
- Act according to facility protocol to ensure safety of all staff and children which includes:
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with staff and children.
- Attend required abuse risk management training.
- Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policyviolations.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
SKILLS AND TRAINING- Current YMCA Lifeguarding, Red Cross Lifeguard Training, or Boy Scouts of America Lifeguarding required.
- Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid required.
- Current Lifeguard Instructor certification required.
- Previous facilitation or instruction in these types of classes preferred.
- Must be knowledgeable about all of the pool rules and regulations as stated in the Lifeguard Manual.
- Must be at least 17 years old.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSOngoing evaluation of physical demands of the position will happen monthly.Must be able to swim 300 yards (using front crawl and breast stroke), tread water for 2 minutes, demonstrate rescue skills, retrieve the brick from the bottom of the deep pool.Must be able to lift50 poundsin order to help pull a person on a backboard out of the water.
