Job summary

The City of Great Falls is seeking a Lifeguard for the Scheels Aim High Big Sky Aquatic and Recreation Center. You will ensure patron safety, enforce rules, and respond to emergencies under supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator.

Responsibilities include opening/closing procedures, water quality checks, daily records, light maintenance, and assisting in clean‑up. Must lift up to 50 lbs, maintain keen observation, and hold Lifeguard/CPR‑AED certifications.

Qualifications

• Must be a skilled swimmer and able to pull weight through the water.
• Physically able to rescue someone drowning or injured in the water.
• Possess or obtain a Montana driver's license.
• CPO, WSI, LGI certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Opens or closes natatorium following checklist to meet ARC compliance.
• Enforces policies to maintain a safe swimming environment and warns users of hazards.
• Responds to emergencies and administers first aid, CPR or AED as needed.
• Contacts EMS for serious injuries and reports to Aquatics Supervisor immediately.
• Assists in cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facility.
• Completes Lifeguard checklist and daily records for rescues, first aid, weather, sanitation, and patrons.
• Performs pool cleaning tasks and checks water chemistry regularly.
• Reports facility or equipment failures to the on‑duty supervisor.
• Participates in rotation schedule as needed.

Job description

Responsible for ensuring the safety of the pool patrons at the Scheels Aim High Big Sky Aquatic and Recreation Center. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator and other supervisory staff.

• Opens or closes natatorium following checklist to meet ARC compliance.
• Strictly enforces policies, rules and regulations to maintain a safe swimming environment and facility. Promptly warns users of any existing safety hazards in order to prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
• Responds quickly to all emergency situations and administers first aid, CPR or AED when needed.
• Contacts emergency medical personnel for serious injuries and reports such incidents to the Aquatics Supervisor and Recreation Manager immediately.
• Assists in the cleaning and proper maintenance of the equipment and the assigned facility.
• Completes Lifeguard checklist and daily records relating to rescue assists, first aid, weather conditions, sanitation and patrons as required.
• Performs occasional pool cleaning and maintenance tasks such as vacuuming the pool and cleaning the drains.
• Checks the pool water by conducting chemical tests; maintains cleanliness of the water by adding the proper pool chemicals.
• Reports facility or equipment failures or issues immediately to on duty supervisor.
• Participates in rotation schedule as needed.
• Performs all other duties as assigned and required.

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Must possess or have the ability to obtain American Red Cross, YMCA, Royal Canadian Lifesaving Association or equivalent Lifeguard Certificate.
• Must be certified or have the ability to obtain certification in CPR/PR, AED, oxygen administration, disease transmission, and first aid.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a skilled swimmer and able to pull weight through the water.

• Employee must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver’s license.
• CPO, WSI, and LGI certifications, preferred.

• Ability to enforce pool regulations and rules while conducting classes to ensure a quality experience and safety of the patrons.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not supervise staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in an indoor environment. While performing the duties of this position, employees may be exposed to varied weather conditions such as heat, cold, and chemicals used in cleaning and sanitation of the pools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to swim, stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds. When more than 50 pounds employees are encouraged to use a team lift. Possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to use pool equipment; the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work week is Sunday through Saturday. This position is a non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working. Shifts will be in 4-6 hour increments depending on programming, facility scheduling and hours of operation.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
