Job description

This full-time position provides overall direction to aquatic staff through lifeguarding and promoting safety to enhance and protect patron experiences. Work is performed under the direction of the Aquatics Manager.

  • Assists with maintaining a safe aquatic facility including providing real time feedback and noting suggestions and comments for supervisor's review.
  • Follows direction from Aquatics Manager, or designee, regarding placement and rotations during shift to ensure efficient guarding and safety.
  • Assist with training / orientation of other Lifeguards, provides swim instruction or similar classes to public.
  • Responsible for guarding and safety of participants within all aquatic facilities, administer first aid and life saving measures per industry standards.
  • Completes housekeeping, general maintenance tasks, and logs data / creates reports as directed.
  • Model standards and expectations throughout shift.
  • Responsible for assigned post until relieved by another guard.
  • Quick action to any potential emergency situation.
  • Attend regular in-service trainings, other trainings and meetings as they are held.
  • Ensure completion of appropriate incident reports.
  • Provides quality customer service to patrons.
  • Attend and coordinate in-service training sessions.

  • Must be able to swim at least 500 yards.
  • Ability to physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard with a waterfront endorsement.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Demonstrate ability to recognize swimmers in need of assistance.
  • Demonstrate ability to recognize, respond and remedy unsafe situations.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and ages.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model and provide constructive feedback.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work typically requires constant exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoor weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors, or dust).

Risk/Safety Conditions:

This position requires constant exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.)

Physical Activities:

Transition between sitting and standing on a constant basis in adverse weather conditions with extreme temperature variations (hot / cold). Constant walking, climbing, balancing, stooping & bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching overhead, grasping with use of hands & arms, pushing, pulling, running. Constant communication involving speaking, hearing, and writing. Occasional use of computer, keyboard, and standard office equipment. Occasional lifting of 25 to 50lbs. Vision and hearing must be correctable.

Position may require the operation of a city vehicle.

(Occasional=1-3 Hrs.; Frequent=3-5 Hrs.; Constant=5-8 Hrs. – Per Workday)


Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Two (2) years of paid lifeguard experience required.

(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)

Licenses and Certifications:

· Current nationally accredited Lifeguard and/or First Aid CPR certification.

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard certification.

· Bilingual in English/Ukrainian or English/Russian is highly preferred.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Florida drivers license

Emergency Response Responsibility

Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
