Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates for Lifeguard I who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of commitment, integrity, respect, innovation, and collaboration.
The hiring amount for this position is $17.50 an hour. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.
This position is responsible for maintaining a safe environment for pool guests, performing responsible semi-skilled and routine protective service work in supervising the safe use of public swimming facilities by pool visitors and aids troubled bathers in emergencies; performs related duties as required. Reports to a Lifeguard II or a designated manager on duty. This position may work at various aquatic facilities which may include indoor and or outdoor aquatic facilities depending on the season.
Thorough knowledge of water safety rules and of life saving and first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies preferred; considerable skill and strength in swimming; ability to enforce rules and regulations; ability to remain calm under pressure/stress.
Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays and/or stand-by/on-call.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, gases/gas leaks, blood-borne pathogens, acidic or harsh substances, infectious bacteria and/or fumes/airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
